here's something that's always bugged me about how creative sites quarantine/ban "noncon" as this neat little box:

consensual sex looks a hell lot like noncon at times.

(not always, and no it's not always in a kinky context, but.)
I get writing may be a little more explicit (lol) on this depending on the point of view of characters but strictly speaking as an artist - listen, sex faces are weird, right? when you're getting your brains fucked out in the good way by somebody who knows their shit - or hell even after a great wank - you kinda don't exactly give a shit about plastering a fake smile on. you're most likely either look like you got hit by a 2x4 timber or are drooling (or both lol).

likewise i'm drawing something right now where both of the characters are hilariously into each other, are of age, equal power level, yadda yadda, like this is easily some of the most consensual shit ever (normally i like a splash of dubcon in my work). and the dude's covering the chick's mouth since he's fingering her in a library (nerds) so she doesn't whole-ass bust their cover by making too much noise.  It's a little surprising how dubcon-y it looks on the surface just due to that gesture alone.

that's just the example that got me thinking about this topic - I can see it getting even messier in writing, actually, if it's only written by one POV and if you didn't know the other POV of the character it may track wildly differently to different people. fiction's weird like that.

to get back to the point - legally I distantly get the point the sites are kind of are strong-armed into having to have "something' on paper because somethin' something' paypal and/or advertisers have weird ass rules about "sexual violence" that may have been implemented in good faith but just do not track with the messy reality of posting drawn/written erotica online. it's the kind of thing that inadvertently breeds something worse - since I can see a lot of people going on the 'just put a fake smile on there to get around it to pay the bills' when ... man, that just doesn't even ring as good sex to read/see anymore, you know? it starts feeling incredibly alienating at that point with all the emotional tenderness out.

(cynically: maybe that's the point)

This is something I've thought about a lot too. The characters in the main ship I draw nsfw for are identical to the characters you're describing here. It's super easy for the lines to get blurry because as you said: sex faces are weird! It's just how it is! And even just the simplest of gestures that are drawn blur the lines even more.

Consensual sex can very quickly and easily get into noncon/dubcon looking territory. It's a thought that's passed my mind more than once as I have drawn nsfw over the past few years since I began. It's nice to see I'm not the only one that has thought about this because its an interesting topic to me.

Though I am a lover of non/dubcon and have written dubcon stuff with them. Haven't drawn any though (well not yet, just haven't had the time to draw much at all these days) I don't have as much as I can add for the writing perspective, because I am quite new to the medium compared to art. Drawing I have done for a very long time. Writing not so much. But since I have read dubcon/noncon I can definitely say the POV or POVs that are written can make it vary to the reader.

Words, Art, Fiction, it's all wild & weird stuff. (I do enjoy myself wild & weird though.)

And agreed, whatever paypal/credit card companies/advertisers maybe put on paper in good faith that just aren't gonna match up with how the complex, messy, reality of drawing/writing erotica and posting it on the web. With having to purposefully take out the aspect of emotion to please the people in charge of payment, the work loses that special something, that spice if you will, to the erotica which makes it good to see/read.

(The cynic part of my brain wouldn't be shocked if it was to intentionally rip the emotional tenderness aspect of the erotica gutted out either.)

It's so interesting how even the tiniest differences can have such a big change. Art is so fascinating to me because of things like that. (Art is just so cool!)

The sandbox nature of fiction and how people can get as wild and weird as they want is something really truly beautiful to me. It's such a fun sandbox to play in and its wondrous what people can build in it. :D

And I absolutely relate to everything you've described there, it is quite the struggle to find the kind of visual smut I want to see for myself too. I've been sifting through the web in all sorts of places to find that gold. While the search isn't easy, I am glad I can create what I want to see for myself too! XD
