This was a war story, an instance of Boyd laying it on thick when talking to civilians - but this does not mean it was a -lie-, as most people define it.  Cooper as a Southerner understood this.  Southerners and fighter pilots know the story is more important than the facts. If a story is not true, it can become true in the telling.
