(moving) goodreads > openlibrary
Nov. 8th, 2021 08:45 pmFirst bit copypasta'd from the goodreads profile for a bit of housekeeping:
No exciting reason or drama for the change; I've always used goodreads as pure personal log (vs the social aspect), so it was a no-brainer on my mission to de-FAANG everything. I actually spend a *lot* of time uploading niche/obscure books and zines (apparently having a heavy interest in art and erotics will do that), so it'll be lovely feeling like my actions were for a net good versus feeling a little dirty that I was doing free work for amazon (and giving them data to boot).
The only thing I'll truly miss is the 'goodreads challenge' since it actually kept me responsible on reading regularly but it feels like a very easy, uhmmm, challenge? widget thing? to implement elsewhere. Heck I'll send an ask to openlibrary to see if they can implement a thing like that.
Anyway, the openlibrary account is a bit of a mess since I gotta (a) add the books that weren't on the site during the import, and (b) add them to the lists, but ah well. Not sure how one would follow me over there, but yolo, it exists ~
As of December, I will no longer be updating goodreads, and will maintain my reading list over on OpenLibrary instead. Please feel free to follow there ( https://openlibrary.org/people/kradeelav ). As of January 2022, the goodreads profile will be deleted entirely. Nothing personal; I don't care to support Amazon in an indirect way when there's a stable open source alternative.
