- "The Rise and Fall of Quicksand" is such a neat little history article on the phenomenon of quicksand, a trope that was far more familiar back through the 60's-70's. (I say 70's, but it may have lingered on a tad bit more given the mud pit in Brave Little Toaster and a few hazy memories of reading choose-your-adventure books after surgeries mentioning them). I've always been nostalgic for this trope for that linkage, and it's neat to see it confirmed it was more popular back then. there's also hilarious fetish related subtangent. ah, internet, never change.
- apparently developer.ibm.com has some extremely well done linux 101 articles? I was poking around google after seeing rootfs as a weird new drive after doing SD card shenanigans with the raspberry pi and not wanting to unmount it immediately before knowing what it did (lol good thing, otherwise it may have crashed the whole computer). depending on how genuinely bored I am after falke I may even try taking a shot at the linux server certs :D;;; that'd be hilarious to add in the resume as a graphic design manager. "you've spent 10 years doing graphic design. what's this cert on here for?" "i was bored and radicalized by linux, viva la open source lol"
- the fucking pun that they added on this page ("If you understand the "root" causes, feel free to skip directly to the four tips on fixing it.") had me cracking up. "finding out IBM has a sense of humor" was not what I expected on this decade's bingo card.
- some corners of flickr are surprisingly still alive; last week i was just showing my favorite server my favorite resource for cool 50's illustrated magazine compositions that gets fed into my RSS feeds. some of these get surprisingly horny!
- One Foot Tsunami is a weird little relic of a different internet that's basically ~once a day tiny little eccentric-wholesome/humorous piece of news~ that doesn't send the pulse racing or feels "optimized" for maximum money/engagement/etc. it's just... nice!
- This is a hilarious entry, I promise, but context first: I have a weird little situation where while I'm waiting on the surgery for the ear, my brain makes phantom noise a la tinnitus. (My going theory is that since I'm effectively a hearing person 90% of the time, it "expects" noise, and wants to fill in the perceived absence. annoying to say the least lol). The gf mentioned that having base/vibration heavy music has a large possibility of canceling it out. I don't want to blast "we will rock you" (lol) on max given it's a shared house,
and i don't have a vibrator around(double lol), but what if I could set a ps2 controller on vibrate, since i've already set it up for ubuntu gaming ...? voila: this itch.io package download looks promising to hacking together the world's weirdest SFW vibrator :P
