- i was light on my reaction to the first 11-ish episodes, which was not a dig at them as i was just ... genuinely enjoying the silliness and the episodic hijinks for what it was - 100% fun and worth watching, but it's not like, keyboard smash hand flailing FEELINGS!!! at least until ep6 imo.sand streamer arc was cool too but it was a perfect transition from those episodic lighter ones to start reaching for the NGE levels of brainfuck that I KNOW is coming. know it in my bones lol
- oh! that one daughter of the ex-gunman-turned-mayor gave me SO MANY diane vibes, that was funny. both looks, acting, the way she kept snarking at all of the kidnappers, like hands down that's straight up diane as an anime character, so fun little IC trivia at y'all. :P
- that said i love milly A LOT! man, i forgot how good old anime was to its ladies -- she's a little bit of an airhead but in vash's words, she's a hell of a lot smarter than she looks/acts sometimes, and i'd bet you dollars to donuts (hah) that she does that quasi intentionally like i do. you can get an advantage on a lot of folks by acting like a cuckoo at times and it's honestly... kind of fun.... i also love her design, like, idk how to not sound weird but it's a literal shapeless triangle, she's not trying to be easy on the eyes, she's here to do her job and sometimes shoot her MAGNIFICENT STUNGUN and eat puddin', what's not to love. <3 <3
- i also love her dynamic with wolfwood - she's good for him. he's just a bit intentionally too charming, too jaded, tryhard - he needs somebody that can both at once bring a little silliness, and ... how do i say this. serindepity? he needs somebody who can bend and bend and bend and not break, as a partner to a poor thing with so many shards, much like vash.
- speaking of, wolfwood arc was very fun and quirky with just the touch of darkness starting to bleed in around the edges especially ep11 when everyone straight up thought vash actually killed the escapees. real interesting that milly was the one to slap vash, imo, meanwhile meryl actually has a pretty good poker face when it comes down to it.
- i like wolfwood a lot! his big booba is peak character design (and especially the camera's, i swear, absolute interest in it every time it does a closeup on him) but interestingly i didn't go full GA GA GOOGLY EYES over him like expected.
- h o l y s h i t that diablo episode..... there's not a lot of media that gets more than a 'yawn' from me these days but that ep wrecked me. T_T; both in terms of an emotional fucking whiplash and then me like, pleading at the screen jesus christ
- relatedly: this is going to make me sound like i have one literal cuckoo brain cell, so i'll just say this once: vash reminds me. SO MUCH. of zihark holy shit.SO MUCH. i don't know when i started making the connections, maybe by the second ever so brief flashback to rem (maybe ep6? yeah i think it was ep6.) like not that it's "just" about the long lost lovers but it's how they're so guarded with the verneer of a frostily polite/funny/nice exterior, they actually do have a mission of making the world better (love and peace ~~) as wandering nomads with no real home to speak of, but also have this messy as HELL relationship with violence and also don't exactly shy away ..... from it.... either, or in terms of villainous presentation when it helps...
- (devolves into conspiracy man blubbering incoherently about an essay's worth of similarities)
- (anyway u can imagine this reading is fun as hell for krad all the way through tho :D )
- the animation itself in the diablo episode went right back up to peak ep1 quality, holy shit. madly taking a shit ton of screenshots there.
- legato is fucking CREEPY. jesus. fuck. like i have no standards when it comes to making kissy faces at villains but this might be the one literal show where i'm like '........... vash plus a wolfwood sandwich plus a side of milly is more my speed just sayin, u can stay over there and get wrekt'. from what i've vaguely heard of knives too .. goddamn trigun gets a gold medal for convincingly creepy villains.
- like he's technically easy on the eyes but talk about walking talking nightmare fuel what with the invisible, telepathic mind control over seemingly everyone around him auggghhh?? and so far he doesn't seem to have any limits / any kind of coherent philosophy one could talk him around/work on him; like if i met him on the street, there is no recourse. and he basically gets off on it. whew!!!
- anyway in general i've been thinking about a storytelling theory that i'm calling, in two parts 'and what if we did THIS' plus 'what's the itch'
- cuz trigun is really good at a style of storytelling where you take.... a trope, like slowly introducing what the plants are, or a situation, let's say, like suddenly we show vash acting Extremely Out of Character with his pacifisim (see i think uhhh, ep11, with the escapees?), and it turns out it was all affected and him doing that on purpose so he can fool the kidnappers into letting down their guard so there's no casualties. then ep12 rolls around, and then he's out of character ..... for real this time.
- i'm not explaining this right but it's like stacking lego blocks on each other, in terms of tropes so you're not overwhelming the audience with 224213 million different lore drops, and it's so emotionally satisfying here.
- "what's the itch" is, personally, what's that absence that itches and itches and doesn't get fufilled until the very end? which can go for both a whole show or a single character btw. for a different game, path of radience's is, personally, 'the mercenaries are stuck with princess elincia and she can't be yeeted back onto her throne until ashnard is dealt with' which keeps the plot going. idk what triguns-the-show- is now (maybe a meta-itch for the audience of 'what the FUCK is vash's whole deal', but i am damn sure that vash's "itch" is 'what would she (rem) do"
which.... ironically...... is also zihark's lol, u see why i started sitting upright here lol - it's not quite the motivation, it's what they can't satisfy. it's what makes the characters keep on ticking in terms of not wanting to settle down and lead an uneventful life.
anyway i'm into this for the long haul, can't wat to watch a few more tomorrow 8D
