kradeelav: Dr. Kiriko (amused)

I've been on a kick of wanting to draw (everything) more convincingly - little background details like table legs and feet, detail on coffins, rocks around a pool of water, all the seemingly "useless" composition fluffing that i'm beginning to notice is what separates okay artists from truly great ones where you see the real passion for everything in reality. good and bad.

(you can see where i'm going with this).

war footage especially from current events fascinates me in a photojournalist-like method, thinking of a photographer or an artist as simply a vehicle for conveying the grim truth. maybe i'm also sick to death of corporatized social media and taking deliberate walks around the internet i remember along with reading more, given i'm mostly off of other platforms. always felt like trying to insulate or shelter oneself too much was not good.

and i've been ... very slow, very careful about checking out forensics photos, war footage, etc, making sure i'm not doing this in a self destructive way, right, we've all seen people get maybe a little too desensitized to irl gore especially if they're going through Other Stuff in their life, or if they're moderating places that are more extreme. (gotten braver about viewing IRL images post-therapy for my medical baggage. previous to that, i don't think i would have dared to do this.)

and idk if it helps others, but i find it extremely helpful to view NSFL-gore images in a peaceful, neutral curious mindset of "how would i draw/render this?"  totally takes away any sting of reaction. just neutral fascination and taking notes. night and day difference to the handful of times five years ago when i unpleasantly stumbled upon a graphic image.

not seeking it out as a buzz or a shock - it truly is almost like life drawing (was way more of a shock for a sheltered fundie chick seeing the first naked person posing for figure drawing, let me tell you, lol), or like baby's first dissection in biology class (which was fun, i'd do that again).

idk, life is short, brutal, and beautiful at the same time. i find i have a greater appreciation for this, on these digital walks, and the note taking for drawing.
