(no subject)

so i've been browsing a lot more hentai lately!

part of it is reading the history of hentai recently, and I now feel equipped to pinpoint the visual tropes and how they've evolved or what era of history they were in. another part of the new reading material (lol) is research for the next big gunter/corrin comic strip i want to draw (Fates -where they're from- doujinshi was also notably good in general). :P

lastly, i guess part of it is boredom with a lot of current comic work ... i like art that makes me feel something, even if it's uncomfortably & overtly sexual at times (i find i can only read hentai in certian moods -not necessarily horny, just more emotionally chill in general vs strict work mode). what's the visual perspective angle of the characters that the artist did that felt too much? was it the sound effects? was it -horror of horrors- the vulnerability? how is it depicted in line weight & the toning?

karasu-chan - Lactation I & II

i think i found karasu-chan on one of those tumblrs that post standalone hentai panels.... fantastic art style, holy hell. karasu single-handedly broke a lot of the artistic constipation i was having in the current FEH strip that i'm drawing because his style is both weirdly "loose" in terms of line weight messiness and super expressive faces that don't feel like your typical anime waifu 8234532. the girls he draws, i feel, you get the sense they're fully embodied and have preferences and attitudes of their own re: getting railed rather just being a lifeless doll to reposition and make noises.

I also found myself oddly charmed at Lactation too? it's porny & fetishy, don't get me wrong, but there's a ton of "worldbuilding" (the premise is a dude playing a R18 videogame for his waifu and then getting cucked by another player within it lol), and also way more actual eros than you'd ever expect. a lot of times hentai is very overtly sexual but oddly very cold in terms of passion or kink/power exchange which is more what i'm looking for. there's also an inherent cheekiness / self aware quality i get from the mangaka with comments at the back along the lines of 'i have no idea why i drew this shit lol don't look at me' that reminds me a lot of myself... extremely tempted to go out of my way to buy the EN physical version if it's possible, but i don't think it is. ;(

Kouta Hirano's whole back catalog

Hirano of course is most famous for being the Hellsing mangaka, but he's done quite a few R18 hentai series before that were very clearly precursors exploring topics near and dear to his kokoro (....and/or dick). <3

i'll be honest a lot of it can be uncomfortable unless you read/watch sleazeball naziexploitation on a regular basis (his longest original series before hellsing was straight up ww2 porn with a mayor's daughter getting captured by nazi forces occupying a city and the resistance group rescuing her and of course banging her), but it was weirdly, weirdly heartwarming to see that he has not in the least bit changed. your mileage may vary but i don't get the sense he's using the history for edgelord shock effect as much as genuinely feeling out (struggling with?) the power dynamics and having a thing for uniforms ... there are areas where he was more nuanced than you'd expect and didn't go for the genuinely crude / tasteless porn setups. was mentioning to the NaZine server a few weeks ago that he'd totally be one of us of poking a stick at the darker elements of the id there, while still trying to find a good balance of subversion vs good storytelling.

Isutoshi's back catalog & Slut Girl

Isutoshi was somebody a comicker acquaintance mentioned recently as being one of the few hentai artists they enjoyed (the R18 work even more than the mainstream work), and i can instantly see why given his immediate, fun 90's cheekiness that smacks you in the face. I did not realize that he did Slut Girl (a quasi-mainstream story i had been meaning to pick up for a while) - long story short it's an office secretary who gets fired for outing a chick who had been banging her boss; the two of them actually become reasonably good friends and set out to be sex workers with hijinks together - there's a Lupin III vibe to the hijinks in that you get the sense they're enjoying the chance to be playfully mischiveous with life itself.
