so i spent about 2-3 hours on elden ring today "testing" the steam deck before putting it aside to be given for christmas. :P

 * hoooooly crap i see why everyone keeps raving about this game and putting 300+ hours in.... it's holding up. i actually started off with red dead redemption 2 but bounced off super hard about ten minutes in because the controls were mapped horribly to the point i couldn't figure out what button to press in the tutorial and i just wasn't feeling the characters/world. i also bounced off super hard off of DS1 very briefly when first playing the switch so i was kinda cautious about this one but it's so fuckin pretty. and explore-y. and gives you a pretty forgiving introduction. it almost feels like a modern day mix of skyrim + TOTK? open world but polished. you immediately stumble on some gorgeous sites and power ups and you don't ever want to stop.

* the gameplay slaps. it's not going to handhold you, but neither does it punish you unfairly; i think i actually died less than your average newbie considering i was making extreme use out of sneaking up on enemies 1 by 1 and crit-killing them from behind; successfully clearing out the little mini 10-people camp right before the stormveil grace/save point was so gratifying and gave me the 'oh i can do this!!!' stealth high. (ironically i'm usually pretty bad at stealth!). the key really is patience before diving in willy nilly.

 * build-wise i started off as your obligatory vagrant but i plan to re-spec into maybe confessor? basically aiming for eventual 2x whips, backup maybe a hand-axe + fire/rot magic (basically going for as close to possessed!gunter as i can for the lulz since this world feels so achingly familiar to nohr LOL).

* i stopped right at the castle morne grace/save point! i heard that place was a great tutorial+ area and it has the first earlygame whip and the quest story sounds neat so far so it was kinda a no brainier to head that way.

cannot waiiiiiit to play this on the big tv screen as my eyes/back hurt after squinting at the steam deck hunched over the dining room table (i can't imagine not playing on my USB gamecube controller since my hands hurt big time after holding the steam deck up) - but i think this dock setup with all the periphials hooked into it is going to be the magic bullet to replicate the old console experience.

tl;dr elden ring is addictive enough i can tell i'm going to need to have absolutely everything wrapped up by mid december or it's going to take another six months to do lol
