i don't always have to like the villain, but i need characters who you can say: he's a snake (with the deepest affection)

they hold themselves a little apart from any social group. you're never quite sure where their loyalties are, but there's an odd if somewhat predictable code of ethics. there's a lot of masking going on. a good bit of humor that might be a part of the former, might not. a sense that they'd do whatever they must to survive but they strongly dislike trampling on others to do so (and yet violence is just as intimate, and curiously as close to their hearts as other sensations.)

trust is by far the most precious gift.
