kradeelav* a good 15+ hours into it now! i'll start with the good. the gameplay is addictive. it can be a little grindy if you do too many battles in a row (me last night barreling through the dragon kingdom lol), but it's perfect for snack-sized battles after work or school. playing with new classes is definitely the best part - i'd argue that this game is very "class driven" in the sense that tellius was "stat driven" and fates is "skill driven".
* the characters, i hate to say it, feel all ... gummy? toothless? I'm trying to figure out why i feel that vs the cast of fe9 (which is probably the most "kiddie" FE i deeply enjoy and whose characters don't feel that way.) and i wonder if it's .... i once had a friend who remarked that i couldn't seem to attach myself to characters who weren't deeply traumatized underneath LOL. not completely accurate (i don't go for the fandom-favorite twinks who have that trait) but i do like characters who have sleazy/unflattering/negative sides that's more than just one single trait. titania in fe9 yelled at soren a few times, had a secret flame for greil even as she grieved for him, was ambitious enough to go with greil to improve her axe skills, and was way beyond the "team mom" archetype, for example. picking her because she's probably the most "lawful good" character I like more similar to UO's cast.
this same creative friend that gave the quote above also looooooved vanillaware/nier games that i bounced off hard on and also conversely they really felt that FE characters "didn't have much to go off on"; they made really good creative art but i just think i must be incompatible with that character taste. really starting to think that sometimes it's just how the characters are depicted - it's not so much that there's badly one-note characters or good execution all the time, it's ... just like how 00's anime framed characters, maybe it's a certian era of storytelling that doesn't do much for me.
* of the cast, enjoying renault (traitor knight looking for redemption), tatiana (unapologetic mad scientist hella yeah), berenice (""bad guy"" general turned traitor), and hmm. there was that chick in northern corrine that was hitting hard on the protagonist that was kinda funny.
* i also may have made a zihark/self insert/gunter copies with the character-customization available with the mercenaries that's providing most of the character enjoyment. :P i think i'll be making a bunch of the tellius characters like shinon + jill too. (especially since archers/snipers are a top tier class in general.)
