ended up deciding to watch a lets play of MGS (PS1 version) instead of continuing with Twin Snakes; sadly I got another disk-read error when I got to the helipad, and between that and not really enjoying the gameplay but very much wanting to see where the story goes - a letsplay seemed better. (Thankfully my gamecube is fine; it's just this one disk, apparently.)

Also funnily enough MGS is the one series that kinda lends itself to watching what with the cutscene/codec call overdose, lol; this is giving me flashbacks to watching 4 in college right after it released. :)

- instantly prefer the PS1 graphics to the GC ones; there's a deep jade richness to so many of these sets that's genuinely beautiful in the screenshot-ability. it's also hella more crisp. even the UI fonts are making my fingers twitch and wanting to find them.

- snake hitting on mei ling is, lol. very 2000's flavored, for better or for worse. ditto with the random naked dude you find(?). (I'm reminded of the poop joke in 4.) of the support gang i like romanov the best so far, she feels so cool...

- hi ocelot, i see you're as gay, gorgeous, and fond of gun kink as ever with the barrel stroking <3

- that set where you find ocelot and where the executive is tied up in the explosive wires for the first time is great eye-candy - really reminds me of the bound sword boss in twilight princess in flavor? I feel like boss fight arenas used to be so much more willing to think about theatricality with limited resources and blocking out shapes/walk-paths in unique ways rather than relying on flashy camera angles or lighting so much. so many of elden ring's boss fights i was dissapointed at because the room itself was so boring; usually squares most of the time. (i think i played ER for very different reasons than most people; hated the bosses, loved the exploration aspect.)

- so much of this is reminding me of MGS2 in flavor; even down to basic floor maps of "six stand-alone room cells within a larger warehouse floor plan"  ...honestly, i end up thinking so much about how MGS2's flavor was subtly different with raiden. like not even 'gamer boy backlash at playing as a bishie in the bait and switch' but how the concept of a bishie protagonist in itself was a herald to a new culture shift that in hindsight, informed a hell of a lot of how I grew up versus the generation before... the vibe of watching black butler as a formative media rather than terminator, you know?

- TRAP FLOORS???? i am once again very glad i'm watching this and not playing it lol.

- so many of MGS's bits of lore i got from osmosis from literal super smash melee; like gray fox and his trophy description for example. this is very much giving me the same kind of weird mismatched nostalgia as watching advent children (the first one) -> and only playing OG FF7 two decades later.  i can't really recommend that route, but it's something.

AHEILAHGELAIHG. i mean. yes. but also that metaphor's going to be stuck in my head forever now / a go-to example for me LOL

glad you are getting 2 experience... i think you'll enjoy the bosses in this game, each one really IS theatrical in a different way, and so thoughtful & unique that years later i still think about how cool it felt to fight [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] hahaha
