so gf and I watched The Sound of Music all in one go tonight (charmingly moving in a sincere way movies from that era are) but i don't know about you,

I was not expecting that last 30 minutes to be more tense than actual "horror movies" i've seen, jesus christ.

that ... was well done, and i am sitting here almost an hour later still processing it, whoof.

Right? I think part of it may just be the sheer tonal shift — you have that looming threat in the background for most of the movie, but it's not really on your mind as you drift from musical number to musical number and connect with the characters. Then suddenly, bam, history.

Side note, this made me want to rewatch The Sound of Music. Heh.

absolutely to the tonal shift, nailed it. no stranger to basically every kind of WW2 movie to ever exist, but it was wild knowing exactly what was out there and *still* being bowled over by the sheer white-knuckle tension of the last bit. Masterful storytelling.
