cool links (inoreader edition)
Aug. 22nd, 2021 02:06 pm- there's this artist who literally 100% only draws his (furry) characters in a Back to the Future(?) AU in a 2D animation style. That's all he draws. the quality of the art straight up better than actual disney films, and i'm just ... god bless. you got one thing you love and you do it damn better than the professionals.
- sakugabooru has been my favorite site since college to study (mostly eastern) animation. there's a 'random sakuga' twitter that's easy enough to hook up a RSS feed to, if you're interested in a steady drip feed.
- Glitch Evolution: The History of Superswimming (in Wind Waker Speedruns) - my recent twilight princess run made me accidentally stumble on a WW speedrun (current(?) gamecube world record is under an hour here), and i couldn't even understand wtf half the glitches used were ... this made for an amazingly informative video that broke down "what"" one of the required glitches was, how people stumbled on better and better ways to implement it, and finally, how they could use it to "chain" together other glitches. i had no idea this was a thing. : o
- (fun fact: one of the glitches requires rapidly jerking around the movement stick 30 times a second ... for five minutes ... just to take advantage of no negative speed cap going backwards. there's also an incredibly zany 'zombie float' glitch.)
- DJFood is one of the only design blogs I follow (even as a practicing designer lol i know, i just can't stand what's trendy these days) - there's a lot of cool pictures of past relevant CD covers as well as a healthy vein of new designs by the dude that's clearly influenced "by" the past. Actually purchased a piece of artwork through a dude he linked, once.
- [ feuilleton ] is the other design blog. Equally a fan of pulpy/punky/on-the-edge work, huge respect and focus for work by underloved gay/queer artists as well as erotica artists. Seemed like a really solid guy (talked briefly with him via email). His weekend links are the absolute best for finding new right-click-tab rabbit holes.
- There was an old, old fire emblem JP fanart site that was hugely influential on my style back then called Hanakago (archive.org link that is mostly nonfunctional); it closed in... shit, early 2010's? and i thought the art was lost especially since there was a super hot spicy micaiah/pelleas pic
that was posted shortly before it went offline. Apparently most of the FE10 art was rescued by zerochan if you wanted to download. :D

Date: 2021-08-24 04:11 am (UTC)and right to the campfire?? agh i love the one with volug howling by her side too - that artist somehow captured the spirit of RD in setting-nuance really really well. at once both idealistic in that sort of fantasy sense but with subtle shades of nuance the games had (strong sense of loneliness at times, deftness with different character archetypes..).

Date: 2021-08-24 11:28 pm (UTC)2) yessss gosh. they manage to convey so much oomph and connection with the Dawn Brigade in so few words, settings, etc... some of that's probably just me projecting LOL but i think also a lot of it is! the gamedevs really knew wtf they were doing!

Date: 2021-08-25 02:11 am (UTC)and you know, you'd probably enjoy the essay that's rattling around in my head that goes into some story/gameplay integration details to FE9 specifically - for example, the map movements of when characters moved, when they hesitated, the whole have-the-hawks-talk-to-naesala thing, the cleverness of the maps reinforcing the 'mood' of the story (shades of evil feeling strangely claustrophobic and 'dark', likewise the chapter with ena being tight and dense so when you finally 'saw her' with your squad there was a bigger sense of drama/oomph etc)
goddamit lua
you're going to make me write this thing i can tell xD

Date: 2021-08-24 01:14 am (UTC)Also good on that furry artist. If you love something, draw it! I used to be an "industry" artist and that shit is soul sucking to draw things you didn't want.

Date: 2021-08-25 02:15 am (UTC)Oh big mood to the industry artist bit - was on that track for a while and hard agree. I'm glad you're in a place to recognize it, though, as a lot of artists don't even get that chance. <3
