Zine Highlight: How to Draw Birds (of the Passerine Order)
To purchase: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1094151341/how-to-draw-birds-of-the-passerine-order *as of posting, only 8 physical zines left, so it may sell out quickly

I forgot how I found this artist (scrolling on inoreader feeds, most likely), but I brought this zine 100% for the reason of drawing bird laguz (from the FE series) better. :P
Jokes aside, this is such a well crafted and solid zine. Sturdy, unique in that it's all printed on grey paper, ~30 pages, nothing but how to draw smaller birds in a refreshingly practical way.
Especially loved that it frequently touched on the "emotions" of the birds and how to render stretch/squash to show the birds looking for things, how they fluff up in aggression/defiance/warmth, even how the positions of the feet can make a bird feel "relaxed". I personally can't draw things unless if I show their motivations/feelings (drawing from a lense of interaction and power), so that was a delight to see and truly understand.

While this focuses on real-world birds, I can absolutely see the knowledge being applied to humans-with-bird-wings and fictional birds as it focuses on simple shapes and the overall construction rather than getting bogged down in specific feather terminology. Felt super satisfied and again, delighted after reading the whole thing from front to back - the only thing I'd like to see in a vol. 2 is more about birds of prey, and a 101 of how to portray birds interacting "with" each other (mating rituals, fighting, foraging for food, running from predators etc) and their environment.
The creator's drawn fabulous birds of prey, so I sense this isn't the last zine!
________
( hopefully the start of a 'zine highlight' series. not full-fledged reviews as I don't have the bandwidth, but at least a 3-paragraph highlight of the gobs of zines I've been collecting. )
