*catches up on ousama ranking to ep 21*

[me, very softly] what the absolute fuck was that omg


the show sorta wavered in quality/pacing for the last ~5 eps or so but that last one sure was something out of nowhere and reminded me of my earlier eps of like, literally shrieking at the laptop screen LOL.

moreover it still kept my favorite fucky as hell crackship apeas/miranjo!!!!!!! TAT;;; APEAS SAVE HER

• i'm sort of ... not annoyed, but distantly amused that the show yanked a few of my favorite 'being stoically immortal/beholden to a demon is Not Fun Actually, and Full Of Delicious Body Horror' ideas/scenes straight from my self insert AU that lives rent free in my mind LOL. 
• ouken himself i have not too many feelings about but that end where king bosse basically imprisoned him in a rock so he couldn't regenerate much less stand up and be imprisoned as a vaguely man-figure with dignity? reminded me so much of ajin in a very real, horror-genre level way. (pretty sure one of the immortal monsters also got buried alive there for infinity). that shit was brrrr.
• damn that animation in the last 2 eps really popped off, they sure were saving their budget for those few scenes, huh. the absolute wonky ass-perspective was delicious to watch -- less boji zipping around on screen (tho that was cool too), but the angles with miranjo??? neon genesis evangelion level of messing around on the psychological/surreal visual level and i am here for it.  using the chair legs as props to show the final divisions between people, the mental state of individuals and just ugh so good, gonna have to rewatch for a potential analaysis.
• easily the weakest part was ouken coming back again every time and everyone being healed "just one more time". would have been so much better/heavier had domas finally died (his arc feels narratively satisfactorily done), likewise mitsama, even if those two would have been predictable as hell. curveball alternative: apeas getting critically wounded like having to have an arm amputated or some shit what with the narrative parallels to miranjo.
  
  • second weakest part was the tragedy porn that kid!miranjo's 'village attacked her and chopped off her hands for some reason' arc slightly veered into; that whole thing with the two uh??? divisions?? of people? and gods just feels weirdly less nuanced than the rest of the show though it could be the show hasn't done the "flip every assumption on your head" thing there yet so the jury's still out. i would have expected with how reasonably deftly they handled bojji that they would do a little better there but ah whatever i still like her
  • third weakest part imo is bosse, i genuinely cannot get a bead on him but that's probably more with character archetype bias.
• WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT HORROR SHOW AT THE END WHERE MIRANJO ENDED UP @_______@; the demon literally vomiting out her "soul", eating it, and then doing that again *with her watching and feeling it* is some grade-A psychological horror i didn't know i needed. holy shit. yeeesh. yeeeeeeeesh.
  
  • still second only to daida drinking his dad's marrow b/c that shit was on another level of 'i didn't know a kid's style cartoon animation could leave me that nauseous' and possibly the grand winner there.
• i get distinct echoes of like, 'brave little toaster' old school 'hey i actually feel something for this weirdass goofball collection of characters' (also especially in the most random moments of the animation especially with kage - i think it's the eye expressions) but then it veers straight into NGE-level of surreal horror literally in the same scene and you know what, i'm kind of here for it LOL
• that river of death scene didn't go all the way there that it could've, but was enough of a 'whoa okay that was something, whew' aesthetic/tonal quality that i'll be thinking about it for a bit.
• extremely, extremely amused that the entirety of tumblr is thirsting over desha :D 

hype that it's not done yet with miranjo, she's easily the best part of this whole shinding
