kradeelav: Dr. Kiriko (amused)

weirdly specific artist ask game meme

yoink'd from tumblr here, used to be an ask game but i love so many of these imma just do this. any artists here/who see this are automatically welcome to take and run with it too :D

1. Art programs you have but don't use
for a long while when i was procrastinating the final jump over to ubuntu (given some very minor but annoying fan issues whenever i touched a pen to a tablet, since resolved in an update), this was krita. but now of this past month, krita is my best friend! <3  blender? blender (3d modeling program) I think is the only thing on here that would count. ditto with godot (game making program).

2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
left, i think; tend to flip the canvas enough that the preference tends to not show up in the final art but wow i didn't even notice this before.

3. What ideas come from when you were little
you know, it's sad to say, but I can't think of anything here. I used to draw tons of dinosaurs, some generic fantasy story stuff that bore some suspicious resemblance to Ocarina of Time, Dragonlance books, etc. Starfighters too, so many of them.

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
>_>

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
HMM. before i made the logs, it was probably 60% shown. after the logs (and after i got over most of my hangups about self insert stuff), 80-85%.  that was actually exactly the reason i made my logs, hoping i'd get less shy about some things, because i personally love seeing the real meaty vulnerable stuff of other people's that "sounds" stupid on the surface (oftentimes that's the stuff that we live for the most), and I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't reciprocate.

6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it)
I still see a lot of The Brave Little Toaster in my storytelling, 30 years later; it's only recently I sort of leaned into it.

7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
Animation in general (meaning, the actual movements). Good animatics are fun to look at but they're brutal to draw.

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
iron crown :v  still appreciate the dears, still want to come back to it in Some (shorter) Fashion but OC's and me have always had a weird relationship at best. I wish I could be one of those artists that like their OC's like i like other things, if i'll be real honest. but it wasn't meant to be, I guess!

After Falke I'm thinking of that zihark doujin i always said I was going to do (maybe him in suits just for extra shamelessness :v) and then finishing What Greater Sin. that half-finished R18 hellsing doujin that held up surprisingly well for starting it two years ago. I mentioned elsewhere that either WW3 happens and I'll go out with a hurrah there, or I get famous with art and then I have those two spicy doujins as what I was previously known as. Either way, that sounds good to me.

9. What are your file name conventions
Screen shot 2022-07-03 at 12.28.22 PM.png

(..... i take a lot of screenshots.)

Now I'd like to think my folder conventions are a little more interesting; for art, I generally have on yearly folder that keeps absolutely every screenshot, doodle, WIP, final, etc that I take for tallying purposes. But if they're part of a larger project like a printed zine, then it's something like 2210_KE_Zine_BoxofDoom/Documents which is an organizing convention stolen from my dayjob system. :)

10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
gloves/boots, easy. some friends and I have talked before how fetish art is a lot of texture and rendering focus, and boy I can see it in those two.

11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what
akira yamaoka soundtracks, one winged angel (....yes. and?), and a bunch of synthpop. those three haven't changed since middle school so I'm assuming that's a staple going forward.

12. Easiest part of body to draw
FEET. i love drawing feet, all those wiggly wee toes. i'd like to think i'm not 'that foot fetishist' lol, but digging boots really helped sort of mentally retain the general structure of feet. plus you can eke out some deceptively great body language from toes themselves.

13. A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing
theeee only one i can really think of scrolling through my inoreader feed is guilt/pleasure? this lovely circle that draws yaoi doujins of more masculine dudes than most. i have quite a few of their volumes, and they're pretty, and the fictional men are much closer to what I like, but yaoi itself in general never activated the brain cells like f/m or f/f, as much as I tried to force it for a few years.

14. Any favorite motifs
long haired masculine bishies with gloves who wear a suspicious amount of leather
uhhh
hmm
you got me here sir ~

15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth)
damnit that IP address is actually a hella funny response compared to "my desk"

16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing
my brain is broken and as soon as i get vaguely good at something, it hates doing it :v  this is a big reason of why i just gave up doing commissions or long term projects so i could just follow its weird little whimsies without going splat splat splat on agreements.

17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what
i'm a basic bitch that always tries to keep a full mug of water beside me so i don't get dehydrated. tend to get a lot of migraines/headaches and that helps. coffee after that - I do get a noticeable drawing "high" from starbucks especially.

18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken
hmm - used a lot of art supplies when i went to a fancy art school(tm) but have donated most of them since; down to a single box now with some gouache that'll last forever.

19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
guns! the, uh, fetish angle (lol) helped but also after doing a bunch as vanilla action props for iron crown and hellsing fanart it just got real easy to memorize the shapes. i like the shapes? i 100% get mech artists who are Very Into drawing mech -- it's the exact same mindless zen on a smaller but more iddy level. something about metal requires a much less flexible brush stroke and it's real nice to go to it as a contrast in comparison to faces and limbs which all sag with skin.

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy (see immediate answer above)

21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways
ousama ranking as an anime this past year was extremely cool in motion and had some horror moments despite being dangerously close to a simplistic/childish type of cartoon style i loathe on a very basic level.

22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any ha ha ha

23. Do you use different layer modes
i abused the heck out of them back in the iron crown webcomic days, gradually trying to chill on them. multiply/screen is a pretty great bread n' butter combo for the anime screenshot look tho.I like hue for the color shift too.

24. Do your references include stock images
i have a ton of boots/uniform references from, um. questionable ww2 history books? :D; and screenshots of very specific related offline gay porn from some dear friends. if it's comic/background heavy, i'll google the occasional refs, such as for critters or props, but uniforms are the only consistent one i refer back to, since they're real fiddly.

25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
i think one time it was rankin/bass cartoons (aka rudolph the red nose christmas one) and my mind did a full ???? for a month trying to figure where the connection was. the best i got was the odd sort of ... gothic? morbid vibe from those cartoons. no shade, still fairly amused, still would love to know where it came from.

26. What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended
my kradeelav pieces are received pretty on point, but one landscape/architectural study that i did in college just for the perspective practice was hailed as this like, galaxy brain take on a commentary of disability.  (i had just... drawn one of those open-the-door-pushie-buttons as one tiny part of the lobby of the building, like was in reality?)

something about that reaction bothered me for a while, I have to admit. like I didn't have a say of whether I wanted physical realities of me to be in the conversation - like I mentioned in the box of doom zine, it's a big reason why I went the full handle split.

27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with
honestly just a lot of floating heads, usually my avatar character because she's got funny expressions. that, or cleaning up the lines of an existing piece that needs to go out - requires a lot less brain work and the "editing' brain is still on.

28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
tons, my favorites are listed on this page.

29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
eastern promises <3  0 desire to draw from it, but boy it filled my headspace in a very good way through some rough years in college. most media I watch these days falls into this category; there's been some good new anime and games to work through on a satisfactory level but they don't bring out the frothing-at-the-mouth that fire emblem did.

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
[shrugs] i haven't paid attention to what gets traction vs not in years at this point, but this (nsfw) piece, as messy as it is, feels like it has a lot of neat nameless vulnerability that holds up too.
