kradeelav: (overlord)
so somebody in a server mentioned a series that was like 'kinda bizzaro, early 2000's, could get really really out there and was never afraid to make fun of itself which let it be super dark in a surprisingly intense way. watch it like a play versus a tv show. bonus: themes of alienation/ptsd'

to which i was all :eyesemoji: because that's kind of a cluster of everything I love plus the fact that tvtropes said the costume department basically raided the fetish stores of that day which .... I can TELL LMAO.

a few more chat exchanges later and apparently i'm watching farscape and I'm ... kind of hooked already on episode 1, ngl.

my immediate impression is it feels super like jim henson* did mass effect 2 as puppets, which, YES.

especially the early part of ME2 where you're in the skeezy terminus system trying to recruit all these aliens. zaara(?) reminds me so much of samara (blue chick that's a calm badass warrior priestess), john the main dude reminds me of joker (absolutely batshit insane plans, always kind of clueless but the soul of the team in the way), and there's more associations lightly made that - this isn't meant to be a comparison - but rather, makes me feel at home, in a weird way, so fast.

also holy shit these sets are incredible, i know people dunked on s1 for bad set lighting meanwhile i'm just soaking up at how MOOD LIGHTING and TEXTURED and sensual(?) this all feels???? do i need to go on a giant jim henson binge or something?

also the humor is incredibly on point? like i barked out a real belly laugh when john was trapped in the same cell as the peacemaker chick and he was all 'omg can u help me? T_T' and she just straight up dropkicked him to the floor and had him in a chokehold between her thighs :DDD one of those you had to be there moments but like, none of these dears are allowed dignity and it is great.

*his son apparently was one of the directors of the show, and boy it shows!
