fuCKIN HOWLED lmao. marathoning OG trigun during a day my brain's half out (ty for chira convincing me to try it :D )
bullet list of thoughts as I work through ep 1-2, no spoilers:
- it's really obvious that hirano-san lovingly cribbed/ganked half of alucard's design off of vash, down to the glasses. it's not a question of who wore it better because honestly, both are pretty iconic looks (and alucard's got half a dozen other iconic looks down to bondagecard, suitcard, girlycard, vladcard that it kinda works for both of them.)
- i'm always weak for the trope of the 'self aware villain' and while vash isn't a villain in the least, he sure does attempt to frame himself as one in a tounge-in-cheek way during these first few eps which is a really cool subversion/inversion of that trope i don't think i've seen, at least longer than a one-off gag or something.
- it's actually ironic that alucard kinda sorta does the same thing. he loves to go full ham as a villain, and is certainly less of a strict pacifist than vash is (understatement of the century lol), but one gets the sense he really could do a lot more damage than he actually does.
- i'm going in vaguely aware that wolfwood (and spoiler) exists (read lightly through the tvtropes page), and also fully expecting wolfwood is going to be my fave, lol. lmao even. milly is so far my fave on screen tho ~ she crafty.
- while the anime looks dated a bit, i really love this style? for the longest time i wasn't a fan of how late 90's anime looked with the funky exaggerated eyes and intentionally off model expressions but trigun is probably the first anime that truly makes it work in motion for me. at least for the first episode, it's interesting how notably a notch above in terms of animation quality the first episode is vs the rest.

Date: 2023-04-08 10:19 pm (UTC)Fun fact, a lot of 90's anime saved their budgets for the first and last handful of episodes or at least key moments directors may have had the foresight to save budget and supplies for! Often this was done to hook in and get new viewers committed before they started taking those little animation shortcuts haha!
Have you been playing spot kuroneko? Its a little black cat that appears in every single episode, somewhere in the background or in a split scene change, its a fun bonus game to [play while watching (or re-watching!)
Your observations about Alucard and Vash sharing an iconic Look are spot on!
Also, I love Millie so much. The clincher for our ultimately deciding to pass on the new weird 3d re-imagined Trigun was losing her presence in the show, the debt collector gals are so great and sorely missed in the present incarnation of this story!

Date: 2023-04-08 11:24 pm (UTC)and yeah!! just finished ep6 and commented elsewhere that you can ""feel"" the NGE-esque brainfuck train barreling down at you even with it being lightly hinted so far. (one of the reasons why i like checking out some of the spoilers for a show ahead of time is being able to pick up on those foreshadowings a bit more strongly. you almost catch more the first go around, you know?
So glad to hear from another Mille fan 8D also i love the trivia about the budget in the episodes - come to think about it, you kinda see that in NGE with the focus on the eva fights versus the dialouge lol
