my favorite part is that you might think like "oh, because people used to say gay as in happy, right", but then you take one look at this thing and it's simply the antithesis of happy. it has more in common with every depressed and broke lgbt I know than anything else

If I may! Gaylord is actually a name people (used to) have in English, appearing as both a given name and a surname. As far as I can tell it's derived from the older French name Gaillard. I'm only speculating, but I think at the time this toy was marketed, the joke was more "look at this dog that has the name of a person! A very old-money kind of person! It's even funnier because the dog is sad and has no dignity!"

And now it's funny for other reasons.

ooh, that makes sense! the cognate for that surname in my native language has... survived linguistic drift much better, to say the least, so I can see where that's coming from

although I can't even tell if they were aiming for "funny" at all in that ad, rather than it just happenning all on its own? I mean, the jingle says that "he looks kinda lazy, he moves kinda crazy", as is the wont of any proper gaylord, but the narrator seems genuinely invested in convincing me that the magnetic bone is awe-inspiring and this toy is Wonderful, perhaps even Brand Name Ideal
