Jul. 22nd, 2023 08:47 pmso there's been a long pause since last time i played Fates: Conquest! picking back where i left off, looks like it was chapter 17 (betrayal ninja chapter) - so a little over roughly halfway through. I'm really, really rusty, and taking this map super slow, and saving a load state basically every turn lol. Still having to restart because the pair-up mechanics will bust your ass if you're not careful.
* already there's so many characters i'm intrigued by, but won't have time to make space for in this one playthrough. part of the issue is since i'm playing on an emulator, i can't grind for supports via DLC, castle battles, or as many child maps. It's my intention to finish this Conquest run, and then at least one of Revelation (since that's the one i watched a let's play of years ago, and found the last few levels fun, let alone the big background spoilers). No intention of playing Birthright.
* of the last few chapters, all of them were so much fun from a gameplay aspect. it was good fortune that I'm investing in gunter this run because being able to solo "the black pillar" with him and corrin was fun, as well as headcanoning a lot more bonding between them. the opera house level honestly still lives in my mind rent free with the exquisite vibes all the way around (the water!!), and that ship battle one was intriuging as hell where you needed to "interrogate" your troops as to who was the real enemy boss, god damn these are top tier ideas. (also xander is cracked, holy shit; i thought camilia was cracked but nope). fates is getting really close to being a solid #2 favorite in the series right after the tellius duology itself, it's been a real long time i felt like a FE game had any sense of being iddy and having a luxuriously lush setting.
* those saw puppet enemies are terrifying, even if they don't hit hard. i love how this game doesn't explain those lifeless puppets at all - feels like the old kind of media where it doesn't feel the need to explain away wiggy elements. fates has some great horror-id vibes around the corners of your eyes, and bits that occasionally streak across. gives me flashbacks to the better naruto chapters where it goes into body horror. I could see some really convincing naruto AU's, and vice versa with this cast; Orochimaru would fit right in.
* the reoccurring characters so far are (other than f!Corrin), Gunter (who she's marrying), Nyx, Niles, Camilia, Xander, Azura, Beruka, Kaze. alas, an emulator also means i can't do the infamousmolest ur husbandu/waifu mini game in your room :< :< i was SO LOOKING FORWARD to doing that with gunter lmao. i'm a bit backlogged with drawing but i still intend on drawing some gunter nasties lol.
* people who I did not intend to use as often but grew on me and/or were that good gameplay: Jakob (his staves and/or stale bread came in clutch the first half, and I liked his professional abrasiveness despite not originally feeling the butler archetype), Elise has saved my ass so many times and this might be the one time I've leveled up a healer as fast as my frontline tanks. she's just also ... super chill? mentioned this before somewhere but her genki girl ^w^ personality somehow does not feel grating at all).
* people who are definitely going to main my next run: KAZE (<3), Charlotte, Benny, Kagero, Saizo, possibly Shura?
* Azura is probably the one non-tellius dancer I really like, but I can't quite put my finger on her. naturally with water being her motif, she feels opaque in a piscean way, very intentionally since she has so many secrets that could kill her instantly if somebody interpreted her wrong.
* this plot point of the ninjas betraying you in this chapter is a bit lol but honestly, fates is so meaty with the setting and the characters that the plot doesn't have to be the load bearing column or selling point. i fondly reiterate how this game feels like a lowkey hentai fanficwritten by laslow with his hand in his pants (there's a reddit thread of a headcanon that's where the game is from and honestly, i love it) where it shoves the absolute cheesiest archetypes and tropes at you but does some interesting (if half baked) things with them. kind of yes-and'ing much like a fanfiction.
* forcing saizo to backtrack literally every turn by opening/closing the trap walls was pretty hilarious ... he's so tsun-tsun at the end.

Date: 2023-09-09 05:06 am (UTC)Azura's is snarky. Peak Saizo.
Sakura's is cute. not too complicated, but it's fun!
Charlotte's is a full on nightmare and perfect, as i like to marry both her her and saizo to people who they truly deserve.
Beruka's is super good and especially in the original version, as the localization cut a lot.
Hinoka's has good lore - nice stuff for worldbuilding + lore. has a sort of...snapshot of something happening vibe that many don't.
Orochi's is super good as she can be so mean, and she's super mean to Saizo (for Kagero! Her bestie and Saizo's ex!)

Date: 2023-09-10 05:35 pm (UTC)Man, from what you've been telling me, the localization did Beruka so dirty especially. That was that "joke" support where they were just "..." at each other? jeez. at least /try/ to go for the spirit of it.
thank you so much again for listing 'em out!
