kradeelavnot a rant per se but an observation (ok it's totally a rant) :P
i love the one time i go full tilt obsessed with a character VAGUELY approaching 'main character' status with decent chemistry with the lead
THERE'S NO FANART OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAUGHHH
(ok there's like all of two pieces. literally. zihark has TEN TIMES the amount of fanart, if not more. love zihark more than life but HE'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING A MAJOR CHARACTER LMAO. imagine my bafflement going all 'w-where's the gunter fanart??????')
i mean he's literally the final boss-1???? ?_? and raised corrin???? in arguably the most popular FE game in the series? HELLO??
anyway i get a big sinking sensation gunter (and gunter/corrin shippers) were treated horribly during the heights of fates fandom. talked to a few of the ones who were around back then and they hinted at it, plus there's a pretty.... consistent derisive tone... that you see in the remnants of youtube comments / serenesforest comments / etc.
the doujin circle and i have talked that in some ways fandom harassment has already peaked a few years ago (2017-2019 were especially bad) but like oof. fates released right in the middle of it. while fates released during my 'disown FE as a series' hiatus i kinda kept a pulse on it enough to keep abreast of the Bigly Drama for shits n giggles and i'm no fandom spring chicken, fandom harassers started becoming a big thing in awakening and fates didn't exactly help with every major ship being debatably incest.
and gunter/corrin unfortunately is 100% the type of ship i could see being hit with the 'PEDOOOO' label on top of the incest bits, lmao. so like whether or not that actually happened a number of times or the fear of it was enough to keep most wanna-be shippers away is unfortuantly a big shadow i still see the remnants of tbh
(mind, the ship's deliciously fucked up! ironically i'd say the massive age gap is the least fucked up about it though lmaoo. but the fucked up quality is exactly why i'm so totally goo goo eyes for those two.)
anyway i think part of my absolutely unhinged drawing/writing spree is pure spite at that sort of [waves hand at] absence? black hole? of creativity, regardless of what specifically caused it. (granted, i could be wrong, but i don't think i'm wrong about the above and it's especially annoying when may/december ships are pretty popular in other series.)
it's also a little annoying b/c there's very few artists out there who know how to draw old ppl convincingly well and [eye twitch], there ARE a tiny handful of amazing gunter fanworks but they're a fraction of the teeny tiny amount of works out there have any idea how to draw him well ime but now i'm just being a snob lmao. (EVEN THE OFFICIAL MANGA DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DRAW HIM jsjksjsjhs)
it's basically almost exactly the same drive that had me making zihark fanart from day one. if nobody else was gonna make the food i wanted I WOULD! (the one silver lining is that i've gotten amazingly good at drawing/writing lately not to mention fast so like .... enjoying this in style versus 15 years ago making very loving but very amaeturly drawn ziharks. :P)
there's another part of me that's just genuinely really sad at missing the chance to share that with the OG crew of gunter fans but ah well better late than never.

Date: 2023-12-01 04:30 am (UTC)The main outlier I can think of is with Rhea/Byleth, which also has weird pseudo-incest vibes, but I wonder if it is a timing thing with coming on just as harassment was dying down, them meeting as adults, plus Rhea being a hot dommy mommy and seen as less threatening.
But yeah on the bright side, rare pair creatives tend to be incredibly welcoming and encouraging folks, so glad you have found community.

Date: 2023-12-06 12:56 am (UTC)Sazamika is the nutty one considering how like genuinely, textually canon it is what with the quasi-hard-coded paired ending and all the lines alluding to their relationship, right? also with how micaiah's age is a plot point in itself too. one of those things that you /can't/ ignore or otherwise everything starts warping around strangely.
i should dig into rhea/byleth more, thank you for the reminder.... ;w; even if i got burnt out with the castle chores the fics over there should be delicious.
