i was installing element yesterday on linux (one of you dear buddies is doing a good job convincing me to give matrix a spin as a discord backup lol).
and apparently there's an obscure interesting little certificate bug on slightly-older-linuxes that makes flatpack (aka the installer) throw weird errors. i figured out a way around that (snaps always do better for me), but the bug led me down a rabbit hole of "why tf does clock drift matter to security certificates?" (answer: it's still kind of magic but time is needed to know if the certificate's expired or not which okay, checks out.)
[ cue growing expression of mild horror at how the internet is held together with duct tape and prayers ] [insert xkcd comic etc]
(which is doubly ...... interesting .... if you know there's a handful of very nice, very eccentric people managing the bullshit that is timezones across the globe :'D;;; )
ok tho i unironically love linux b/c one tiny bug makes you learn about incredible bullshit like this lol.
