xmen97 s1 thoughts (since ep10 came out last night)
* i think i'm severely lukewarm on the show post episode 5, that one was definitely the highlight. (both for magneto bias reasons and also genuinely moving storytelling shenanigans. i'd watch ep5 again in a heartbeat. can't say the same about the rest.)
* the overall pacing on this show is wayyyyyy too fast for me to give a shit about characters and honestly rogue/magneto is long overdue for a talk about whatever the status of their dynamic is [regardless if it ends shippy or not]. the fact it hasn't happened yet has definitely dimmed my interest in them show-wise. i've kind of been guarded with my hopes with them and just... imagine me sighing resignedly over here lol.
* also ep10 yanked me out hardcore of believably with several of the xmen (rogue notably) zooming around outer space without spacesuits and shit. sure they got specific superpowers and i can sorta stretch it with the believability with the super-healing (though wolvie loosing his bones is. not that. mags getting stabbed is one thing since that was with a piece of metal but wolvine loosing his bones is. nah.) - but for the plot to be all 'five seconds later now you gotta worry about being sucked into outer space' ain't it chief.
* also really really really not keen on charles mind-violating magneto again to turn the lights back on earth. both for the skin-crawling way that was handled consent-wise and also how it's way fucking easier to fry electronics than to just turn the whole mcfuckin planet back on like a switch, like come on. kind of felt like a cop-out? likewise the president shooting missiles at asteroid M like what the fuck do you think that's gonna do, mate?
* also purely thirst reasons but i really preferred magneto's old (all spandex one with the blue cape) costume lol.
for all the bitching it wasn't ..... horrible don't get me wrong lol, but mmm. i'll eventually watch s2 if friends mention mags is in there enough, butgunter fe: fates still has a death grip on me and i'm way more fond of that.

As far as pacing, I've never been a big X-Men reader, but I gather they jammed or at least teased a huge number of historically major storylines into ~300-350 minutes.
But as a thing in itself, I found it really good except for qualms with Ep10, and I entirely agree the first half of the season was stronger.
The whole Goblin Queen thing in Ep2 came out of nowhere for someone who doesn't read the comics and was given no explanation that I recall, but the rest of the quandary about the clones I thought they did a good job with.

a fan in a different discord server had a take on the cramming-together timelines i liked and think you'd appreciate .... almost 'teasing' the larger storyline arcs to a more mainstream audience in this show, so that if somebody's interested in a certian part, they're free to backread those issues. it's a little like good fanfic in that sense.

not saying i won't watch it because of this/at all, but more that i'm always hesitant to watch a show that tumblr recs that seems like its clearly a kids show, at its core, or rooted in a kids show (the old xmen show).
(and if i'm off the mark on this one, let me know!) something like that, and i won't like it because it's a kids show.)

honestly, you're right with the kids show bit; they're able to slide in more sexual undertones/occasional swearing than i ever remembered way back then (which was fun to /me/) but ultimately it's still hmmm... catered to early-mid teens? it's kind of funny since i guess you could say the same about a bunch of nintendo's series but the other pinch for '97 is that it really is super rushed so any genuinely adult arcs/nuance gets squeezed out.
