reading about google's unveiling of ai-only search pages at i/o, windows 11 fast tracking blatant always-on spyware, and seeing this apple ad for the first time today is making me seriously consider the timetable to get off the last remnants of gmail/drive/going back to a dumbphone/etc for good.

the genuine condescension to humanity i see written all over those actions is. mm. ethically distressing, to say the least. when the actual hell did it get so bold.

Today I got an email from my company's IT department asking "hey are you accessing email using Thunderbird on a Linux machine?"

And I was like, "yeah. Is there an issue?"

And the dude's like "no, just checking, because nobody ever does either of those things so I was wondering if you'd been hacked" lmao. Truth is when my previous computer died I just absolutely could not face the prospect of installing Windows 10 again and then having to neuter all the weird ass intrusive stuff from square 1. But I guess mostly people have been conditioned to passively accept that kind of shit???

Which is just to say that. Yeah I feel this. Increasingly.

auuuuugh. I've been cutting off all the spyware shit as much as I can but I really need to knuckle down and start actually figuring out how to run a linux machine myself. I'm already off gdrive as much as I can be (libreoffice <#) but I need to get back on shifting everythign over to protonmail.

I made the mistake of updating Windows and I was already annoyed at Copilot being AI, but this article is making me more worried. Jesus, this is really getting worse. I'm going to see if it can be disabled, but this legit evil and really not making me want to upgrade any technology if I can.

ETA: I disabled it but it's scummy as hell how it's pre-installed in future updates and on new models!!

I've hated Apple for over a decade before this new wave of technology, but I always thought of Microsoft as "old reliable" albeit flawed. I hope more users are waking up.

"when the actual hell did it get so bold."

We've been a frog in boiling water for the last 20 years. This is exactly the trajectory we've been on this whole time. And it won't change unless there is government intervention. (It's depressing how much of getting any product to be more consumer-conscious is because of EU intervention, specifically. The US sure doesn't care to do anything to make their precious corporations play nice.)
