reading chelsea manning's biography (readme.txt) after hearing about it through a deeply moving post and just...

aching. at how her, snowden, and i had the weirdest most similar upbringing online. home lives were obviously very different but how both of them talk lovingly about online life as an escape, as a way of being something more truthful than what they were perceived as irl.

I feel like that's pretty much everyone who was online outside of like the really shallow outer rings for a spot there, before every high school bully encroached on social media and started calling the people who were there first "terminally online" or whatever

you know, you're right about that - whether folks were fleeing from bullies, alienation in itself, or intellectually and spiritually thirsty for a more knowlageable and diverse world that they fit in. probably why the 'information wants to be free' crew had the influence as long as they did.
