website breakthrough! \o/

i've talked about how i'm moving my art logs off of wordpress to tegalog, a JP microblogging cgi program you can self-host and customize. i'll talk later about tegalog's advantages (even with the language barrier from EN), but the long and short of it is that it emulates tumblr's blog view and tumblr's archive view seamlessly, with an image focus. (versus 90% of western sites like Ghost or Publii which prioritize text).

this evening i was itching to get a live demo of the logs working. two hours later, got both the "blog" view and the "gallery/archive" view working!!

here's the blog view, nested within my default theme for kradeelav.com (I know some image links are broken and don't care; this is proof of concept): 



note the easy-to-navigate "categories" (top) and "hashtags" (below in grey) link up top. i'm gonna have the hashtags be fandom related (see: fefates), and categories being related to whether it's a work in progress, resource post, or meme.

and here's the working gallery/archive view, no edits done to the theme yet: 



you can see how easy this would be to clean up and search for posts even way back to years ago!

I was talking with (more like tempting lol) a dear friend over how useful this is already, and it's making me realize that I really need to write an EN "how to" for artists setting up tegalog for their personal sites.

next steps for me: 

* set up categories/tags and confirm they work
* crosspost ~10 posts from both logs (make sure both NSFW posts and SFW posts are working)
* make sure RSS feed for the whole (merged, new) log works did already lol, that was easy
* backup everything
* copy whole site over to new host, and confirm no broken links
* then start the log migration (100+ posts to reupload lol)

Neat! I like that there are tags and categories. Looking forward to seeing everything up and working.

oh shit this looks AMAZING so far and im taking notes for the next website im cookin.....

something i have always not liked was figuring out the whole..prioritize images but still be able to have text/thoughts as captions longer than 1 sentence? This looks like a really good solution... taking notes and bookmarking many things

:D so glad to hear. I miiiight be in the process of writing EN documentation with somebody, and will definitely post about it if it goes through - so hopefully there'll be more clarity if/when you want to try it. :)

(apologies if this sends twice) It's exciting to hear that the tegalog setup is going smoothly thus far! It's something I have been eyeballing since returning to a full static site setup (disrespectfully, RIP Wordpress), but have struggled to get working on my own site. If you do get around to making an EN how to, this web user will be excited to read it, but if not, it is a ray of hope all in the same to see someone get it working, and to know that things don't have to be so painful.

oh i feel you so much. the worst part is there's so many boutique text blog software out there but they never *quite* offer exactly the few things artists used to tumblr need so it's a weird feeling!

i appreciate you letting me know about the interest with the EN documentation - already surprised at how many people are into the idea so it's making me prioritize that more. :D for better web-homes!!!

ohhhh this is pretty relevant to my interests actually.

tumblr is still home for me (<3) and i'll be there until flood or fire take it, but like. flood or fire will definitely take it at some point, right

and the archive view is tbqh a killer app for me. i LOVE being able to see everything "at a glance" & i love being able to filter that "at a glance" view by photos vs music vs pictures...

i hadn't looked too hard for a solution, though i got curious about micro.blog for a bit—mostly because i get the weekly digest of Alan Jacobs's really lovely microblog—and while it seems nice enough, there's that nagging feeling of... if i'm losing the built-in social aspects of something like tumblr, i'd really like to just self-host the whole thing and get the ownership that comes with that, right?

anyway, looks like this could be the solution i was groping for :P will watch with interest any EN documentation you end up typing up!

RIGHT with the archive view?? i was almost sold on Publii/some static site generators but just could *not* get around that missing use-case there, and it's weird how yet, that feels like it would be somewhat easy to code, if not outright yank from tumblr's way of doing it. it's also honestly insane how *intuitive* tegalog is - stuff just... Works! even with this gajin fumbling around lol, so i feel like it's weirdly more accessible than a lot of other programs.

appreciate the interest in the documentation <3 getting a shocking amount of interest there so def bumping it up higher on the priority list!
