FE game ranking
I did a FF ranking not too long ago before starting FF12, strikes me as something kind of fun to do for FE! (especially since it's been "my series" for so long). think I briefly did this on the main tumblr back in 2023 but that was before my current Fates rampage. any longtime FE fans here are welcome to pick this up as a meme of sorts. :D
FE9 - <3 would grab this game along with my laptop if there was a house fire. easily beat 70+ times - overdue for a run actually. admittedly biased towards this one since it was my first (and it has zihark lol) but it's also the only FE i genuinely enjoy every single one of the characters and would be down to write a fic with any one of them - they're all recognizably different and memorable but well-rounded without feeling gimmicky, which i credit with the writing which is the best in the series, hands down. while the aesthetics are definitely... dated, i'm still charmed by the UI so it doesn't bother me lol. deceptively good levels & how they work with the story, though it could be harder (even FE9 JP-only lunatic; it was more tedious than outright hard).
FE14: Revelation - (beat 5+ times in the last year lol) the only game to genuinely compete with Tellius, holy crap right. (I'm also cracking up because I'm possibly the only person in the world that likes both old-FE and rev this much). I like it for exactly the opposite reasons of tellius - it's gorgeous, the themes (ideological traitors, coercion, possession, cosmic horror) are chef kiss, the writing is deceptively good especially in light of both other routes if you squint in a specific way, the levels are almost as good as conquest, threads that needle of 'difficult but without being annoying/tedious', the endgame/climax did NOT miss, HOT POSSESSED GILF SCENES!!!! etc. very much a 'idk how ~*quality*~ this is but god damn the skeeze is written specifically written to shotgun me in the id' game
FE10 - beat 30-40+ times? <3 the day i picked this up from gamestop ranks up there in best days of my life ngl :D like lua said a legitimate critique is that it's very uneven with story chapters in the middle third; but the beginning bit and ESPECIALLY ashera's tower is an ending that did not miss one bit. probably the best climax i've ever seen in a game, period. also kick ass writing with all of the characters in a way even with my singular blorbo goggles i'm still thouroughly able to enjoy them all, and shockingly great with a wide variety of lady characters though the lack of real supports hurts.
FE7 - beat ... 8-ish times? despite kinda having a corny ass standard JRPG plot, there were a number of the characters i enjoyed like legault, canas, renault, and vaida. .... my recent post 2020 interest in renault was maybe sparked from a truly epic old man yaoi cosmic/body horror fic i once drew for in nagamas lol. this game's much more interesting in the margins than with the main characters, kind of like tellius.
FE14 (Conquest) - beat twice. honestly not a fan of the overall story in this one but i deeply enjoy the aesthetics & the levels/maps. marrying gunter is (in my extremely biased opinion) the best part LOL. i will probably inevitably do a m!corrin(crossdressing)/camilia run
FE8 - beat 5-ish times. oddly, i think i'd enjoy it more now than i first did from a cosmic horror theme standpoint since revelation gave me a new appreciation; i could see this easily beating FE7 if i gave it another play. special shout out to having some of my favorite villains in the whole series (possessed lyon, valter, calleach). i would probably become insufferably thirsty over duessel, fair warning. :P
FE13 - beat 4-ish times.... caveat that while i really disliked the main cast & story (sorry) i found it tolerable by (a) doing exclusively tellius/villain runs with the downloadable spotpass characters and going ape shit with a self insert au that basically rewrote half the story, and (b) exploring robin's whole dark mage/cosmic horror side :D
FE16 (Three Houses, all routes) - beat.... 5-ish times? married hubert twice but i'll be honest this was much more of a 'distract from a brain recession' game than anything truly enjoyed lol. kind of soured on / not fond of 3H these days; the levels are terribly generic, the gameplay is ehh, the story doesn't really hold me.
FE4/5 - beat 4, kind of technically stalled halfway through 5... i very much enjoyed Travant & Altena's whole fuckery but it's dated enough / the fan-translated script was mmmm, not good enough to hold me. aesthetics kinda slap tho.
FE6 - beat once, never really could find A Blorbo that appealed, and the maps were *just* difficult & samey enough to be annoying.
FE1&11&12 - played 11 & 12 once and was very very let down lol, and part of why i swore off the series after awakening. i know they're special games for JP-side but not for me.
_____
(this group are FE's I have no interest in / no intention of playing. maybe if somebody gave me a 'krad this is why this blorbo would specifically appeal to you' elevator pitch, but yeah.)
FE14 (Birthright) - the most likely to escape this list, but not being able to recruit gunter because he's essentially dead would emotionally hurt. :( i suppose i could ""recruit"" my overclocked rev version as an "otherworldly bonds" type....
FE3 - shrug emoji?
FE17 (Engage) - the character design is a massive turn off tbh. some questionable character designs i can get over (coughfates) but this one is a hard no.
Warriors & Three Hopes - I also really dislike that style of gameplay
______
Outliers:
* FE2&15 - haven't played, but interested in picking up. I suspect SoV will be around FE8 in terms of appeal.
* FE Heroes - I can't in good faith place this in a mainline title ranking, but i do unfortunately still play it daily from 2020 or so in vain hopes of a zihark&gunter alt and probably will until end of service >_>
