... i think that was the first time i saw an area in a game so beautiful i legit teared up a bit.
* for somethirst reasons i basically decided to LARP as possessed!gunter since i thought he fit in pretty well with the aesthetics. i uh. did not realize how well he/his fates/revelation lore genuinely fits in with the game; there's been at least six times i flipped my shit at the similarities, up including to a 1:1 scene setting in my slowburn fanfic that was honestly a little spooky. anyway it's been nice filling in the "gaps" with ER lore with the above. i'm not sure if i would call it a critique (because i'm not bothered by it), but ER drops its story lore so slowly i could see somebody getting impatient and/or turned off by it if the world/exploration/combat didn't appeal to them.
* macabre-ly beautiful is the vibe i would dub this game; there's genuine love crafted into the designs of the monsters even when they're hideous like puss to look at. there's a wonderful mix of ugly/sublime in both the biomes (poison swamps to starlit ruins) and the critters and the characters that feels genuinely rare in games these days; it's a cool gothic-like range.
* difficulty wise i'm pretty happy with it; i let myself farm for runes in greyoll (runes can be used for both experience points and buying stuff) if i start getting genuinely frustrated as i figured that's essentially the way to put yourself on "easy mode". still die occasionally and definitely 4-5x to bosses but it's not like i'm panicking at every mook fight, and it's still nice to get chills after defeating bosses.
* today i also just explored a chunk of the deep sofia river underground and... holy shit. i was awed twice in zelda: tears of the kingdom (wind temple & lightning temple) but with ER i'm just so.... consistently awed at every single new biome; and I'm still in the early days when i know there's even more beautiful places ahead. a huge part of the appeal of this game is the exploration.
* this might be the one game horseback combat is genuinely more appealing than it is to fight on foot -- i used to farm runes on horse (torrent) at the section where five trolls are wandering around and it was genuine fun riding circles around them and irritating them enough to start swinging at each other lol. dueling nights calvary on horseback is so unbelievably fun it almost reminds me of starfighters zooming around.
* going for a whip main build mixed with a lil' halberds (mostly night's cavalry halberd for sneakstabs + gravitas) and a light touch of magic/dragon incantations. occasionally a bow when you need to bait out something; generally the weapon types are pretty well balanced unlike skyrim when it became wildly apparent that a sneakbow build was OP. not interested at all in multiplayer though; i play entirely offline also because my internet sucks in the main tv room. :P
* for some
