Feb. 11th, 2025 09:21 pmalways felt so poetic that my beloved mil-shitpost server (which covers some deeply heavy topics in... exquisitely colorful ways) is also unarguably one of the most starkly, consistently, deeply empathetic spaces about the human condition with the weight that it deserves too. it's such an incredible contrast to a platform like idk bluesky which consistently turns me off for how shallowly and pettily uncurious it feels.
gosh just bury me in the old internet.

Date: 2025-02-12 09:30 pm (UTC)great question! in thinking a little, i think it has to be the lack of "defensively posting". not that the old web was perfect or even more kind (it could be quite cruel in its own way) - but there was a near universal sensation of posting more anonymously, less seriously (connected-with-your-irl-handle-and-anything-with-high-seriously at least). easier to mouth off casually and not feel like your entire real world name would be at high risk of being doxxed/dogpiled. and on a lower stakes sense - there was more silliness and goofing off also because people weren't trying to use handles for side hustles, and so they didn't have to be on their best PR behavior. i really do think that's why shockingly wide swaths of the internet feel so corporatized even when they don't have to be. (a good example is the vibe of artist's portfolios now versus past personal sites in the heyday.)
the old web is still there on the edges imo; sadly it just takes actual active digging and effort.
