At the most minimal level, people in love put their trust in difference rather than being suspicious of it. Reactionaries are always suspicious of difference in the name of identity; that’s their general philosophical starting-point. If we, on the contrary, want to open ourselves up to difference and its implications, so the collective can become the whole world, then the defence of love becomes one point individuals have to practise. The identity cult of repetition must be challenged by love of what is different, is unique, is unrepeatable, unstable and foreign."

Date: 2025-03-11 03:13 am (UTC)very worth reading! finished it tonight; i did think the middle 2/3's about love-and-politics (can it even coexist, why are they different, etc) was the weakest but i deeply appreciate him writing the defense of love-as-two-and-not-one (the romanticization of one-as-joining throughout literature) and love "enduring" being the critical part. literally was writing on a tumblr ask meme recently that you know about that i always liked reading and thinking about established relationships more than the 'they fell in love' bit because established relationships felt crunchier and engaged with the more mundane but relevant parts to lived lives. definitely thinking about it for the next few days which is mission accomplished for a rec. ;)
