mulling over a potential thesis / direction of art.

on one hand, I quite enjoy my current 'brand-less' state (and any 'theme' is more limited by the subject matter and medium that I draw: eg villains and leather, zines). however, there's a part of me that wants to muck around more in design - somehow muddying that gap between illustration + design + catharsis. get away from the monopoly photography has on the cool, fun, raw kinky shit, get back to illustration + text without it being kitschy.

and I quite like the term anti-propaganda.

'counter-propaganda' is quite distinct as it's a defensive, reactionary take on the propaganda itself, using the same design principles and motifs. that, I don't want - it's needlessly shooting yourself in the foot by being limited to those standards, and it's also far too intellectually and emotionally manipulative for my liking.

anti-propaganda, to me, seeks to purposefully cultivate the nuance, the seedy, and the humanity.  less about the abstract masses banding to Fight The Enemy, more about dissecting why we suddenly decided there's an enemy, and to open the floor for discussion of such. (if anything, I want my A(A)CAB zine to be a living example of this - a proxy of "the enemy" gleefully describing why he does what he does, and it being a subversion of some unfortunate trends of today). less about creating a legend to stir up the masses to destruction - anti-propaganda uplifting messy catharsis, the lazy simple moments of humanity, exploring the hidden lives of minorities, some that are never before voiced out of wary fear - all the shit that propaganda itself seeks to eradicate. it's still reactionary in the sense of being the opposite; but also, i hope, being aware of the id/mythological power of propaganda and deliberately robbing it, rather than simply reactionary.

deliberate deconstruction of institutional power. deliberate "wrong" id.

deliberate individual humanity.

I can see how maybe a certain book you looked at last night (cough) may have contributed to this entry... hehe... I'm all for it. I love when artists bridge text, design, and illustration. I'm huge on it, and I would love to see even more of it from you!
