disco elysium loveblog pt 3
(no spoilers)

I took a break from disco elysium (not entirely voluntary - playing the game took longer than the expected-to-finish-over-the-roadtrip, then fucked up both of my arms in different ways with various joint pains and then got distracted with work stuff..). but charging my switch and seeing if shorter playing sessions with breaks will do the trick. I think I'm still on day 3, but the later end.

(god I really need to set up my switch-to-laptop-screen system - have a sneaky feeling that'll be easier on the arms/eyes. I have the HDMI recording conversion kit, just haven't had the time to commit >_<)
  • something I forgot to note in the past loveblogs is this has been super interesting playing along with being introduced to IFS by my therapist. IFS (Integrated Family Systems) is a type of therapy cooked up in the 90's that has been particularly useful against long-term trauma, and is structured around the idea of your headspace having separate "parts" - members of the internal family, if you will.  Some parts might play a protective role for others that are hurting, and the idea is to have a healthy awareness of where pre-existing tensions are and to resolve long-unresolved bits.)
  • if you're the least bit familiar with disco elysium's thought cabinet ... it's basically the exact same thing. I don't think the video game creators were aware of IFS (they could be!) when they created that particular area of the gameplay, but wow.  clearly there's something ... narratively interesting going on there, whether it's "(slightly exagerrated) mental parts are entertaining as a game for more of an unreliable narrator"  and/or "being aware of different internal mindsets is cool, actually, with great results for introspection. and even just a healthier self". idunno, lotta different things going on there.
  • doing the middle bit of the rave-party-in-a-church-but-accidentally-found-a-lovecraftian-silence-spot one was actually kind of interesting to, heh, somebody who does hear nothing but silence as a default. :D (but also hears a mechanized version of sound.)  actual-nerves-don't-hear-shit silence to me has always been almost as "noisy" as sound itself; if you've ever had tinnitus it's a less annoying, more ignore-able version of it. though, there's been instances where sometimes the brain starts to form its own god-awful tinnitus sound and I have to sort of ... out-think of it? deliberately think about Something Else so it doesn't hyperfixate on a made-up sound. brains are weird about auditory stuff and I still love that one "Voices" book that went into this.
  • I'm intrigued with the Pale concept in-game but I haven't experienced, imo, enough for it to really resonate yet. that being said the paledriver character is extremely rad and probably my favorite after the main two dudes. very dark-pisces in a way, which I'm naturally biased to. :P

> 'on a scale of 1 to 10 how much are you enjoying it?'

me: weeell i'd die for Kim and i'm playing this thing in bed (like the old days of playing GBA FE games in bed) when i'm supposed to be asleep after a few hours marathon'd already....

:D

gr8 game, bloody perfect art style, wanna read detective/kim slash fics already, feels surprisingly .... not twee? like how everything else feels these days?  it actually feels like a modern-day FF7 in terms of 'grungy kinky weirdly-wrong beautiful world with a deceptively deep story' classic.  going into it with zero spoilers ... got a long road trip next thursday/sunday so it'll be a pleasure savoring this thing over the next week.
