  • read a suuuuper cute headcanon on reddit today about Meg, in a what-if post if she got in FEH: "The core of this build is her unorthodox statline, her personal skill Fortune (prevents crits), and a personal headcanon: that Brom and the whole Ohma village had her sword and armor blessed by the local priest for her big adventure. Nothing but the best for his lil' girl."
    • I love this headcanon!  this alone gives her so much more character than RD gave, and emphasizes her real bonds with the home community and with Brom that Crimea as a nation does so well (see also, Nephenee). It also gives her a window of opportunity to grow into way beyond just a one-note joke, to the point I wish that fully-written supports were a thing because this would be a perfect thing to weave in.
  • Had so much fun writing Ghost in the Dunes late last year I've been tossing around ideas for a sequel set in Hatari. Nailah's just too cool. Part of the reason I think I liked it was that the fic was very intentionally ... concise. tight. wasn't going to do more than those 3 big scenes, and every smaller scene in there was absolutely needed for the plot to work.
    • The best I've got so far is that somehow, Izuka's feral potion got diluted/modified into something that's basically like, heroin/a steroid for laguz, and Nailah's got issues with what's basically cartel gangs in Hatari and trying to stamp them out, lol (I didn't say it was a good idea!). Unfortunately that idea's way, way too wide-spanning to spin into something 2-3 scenes which is better for simple character explorations, although the idea of stat boosters having a dark side to them has always tickled my nose with potential.
    • Another fic idea I briefly considered was Rafiel talking with Renning (post feral-potion poisoning in RD pt4), now that I've got a handle on Rafiel. Not nearly as confident as getting the character voice for those two, so going to sit on that until after Nagamas is done, and/or the RD playthrough.
  • fic rec // I remember very few works from the old ff.net days, but one fic that's always lingered around the recesses of my mind is Queen of Sorrow. in a nutshell, it's basically "what if" Elincia starts spiraling, after the events of Pt2 of RD, and begins treading on a very dark path where all knives are pointed towards her. Basically, Worst End RD.  While keeping in mind that this was read during my highschool days, I always thought that the level of nuanced characterization was unreal, and shockingly good while respecting both the tone and everyone's backstories. Never really particularly cared for Elincia as a character but this fic basically single-handedly gave me that.

i would absolutely read your take on "Fire Emblem does The Wire"haha. (if you want to bounce ideas around lmk... my first thought is, there are ways to make the cracking-down-on-cartels concept work in a much tighter/shorter space if that's the story you want to write but you don't want to do a whole sprawling Thing TM of it; my second thought is that Renning and Rafiel have voices that feel figure-out-able, but I'd be curious what the kindling/spark for their encounter would be... I always find it hard to build a fic just around a shared/similar background until I find the thing that forces some interesting dynamic between them in addition to that juicy backstory stuff... which drives me INSANE when i knOW it would be so COOL but i just can't hit on that spark (cough my moribund claude/yuri fic). BUT YOU GOT THIS I'M HYPE FOR WHATEVER)

oooh, re: the renning and rafiel stuff: could it be a case where renning self-exiles to Hatari just to start anew + make sure he doesn't inadvertently cause any drama for Elincia's reign? i could see that; would be really interesting to get an outsider's perspective on Hatari from someone who's pretty invested in setting up there for good... he and rafiel strike up a friendship or whatever...

re: i don't have any tremendously *specific* ideas on Hatari-does-The-Wire, haha, i'm just good at paring down other people's ideas to stuff that's more refined, but riffing off the top of my head, one-shot fics that could probably work ok:

* opening sentence to the effect of "Volug hasn't told Nailah he's here," cold open to Volug investigating the undercity/catacombs of Hatari. be very generous with all the exposition-y details except why he hasn't told Nailah about this investigation. he's caught wind there's a smuggler's route around here, dude has like a +20 buff to stealth, he's checking it out. finds out one of his fellows in Nailah's guard (who is also the guy receiving the goods) is the guy receiving the goods (no need to go into crazy detail about the effects of the drugs or the scale of the trade; just an insinuation here + maybe volug bristling b/c he remembers muraim there), have volug tackle his buddy as soon as everyone else clears away, they have a brief tetchy argument that's sort of about Hatari's Future TM but also about the way Nailah runs her guard; maybe Volug's friend thinks she's too heavyhanded and technically Volug kinda agrees but that's exactly why he should *not* be getting tied up in this shit. dude agrees to quit his involvement in this, reluctantly. follow-up scene is Nailah summoning the two of them the next day. she found out about it because bitch knows everything, she asks Volug if he swore the buddy would stop, Volug confirms yeah, then Nailah murders the buddy on the spot anyway. net thing would be some kind of meditation on the futility of violence as a reaction to the violence of the underground; volug was *trying* to handle things quietly, b/c he's starting to suspect Nailah can't just murder spree her way out of this one. and maybe she even acknowledges it on some level; closing line could be her saying "good work" to volug & offering no reprimand for him even though technically he was, y'know, sneaking around and shit. title it "lefthanded wolf" or something. that shouldn't be *too* terribly long; one very long scene (sniffing around + confronting the dude) + one shorter scene

* conversation between Nailah and Sanaki over a meal. pathetic fallacy the shit out of all the food being served, describe each of the courses in obnoxiously metaphorical ways, this is fanfiction babey we can be camp if we want to. ANYWAY. meal starts initially with pleasantries, quickly gets to the root issue where Sanaki suspects some of Nailah's agents did a terrorism to a bunch of Begnion farmland/alchemy-places (i have no idea how the drug is made, if it's grown vs manufactured, etc). nailah doesn't cede an inch but is kind of blithe like, oh, well, you know they were just growing that awful stuff, sounds like whoever lit that ablaze did you a favor. sanaki gets more pointed. yes, but you also destroyed some perfectly good farmland along with it. that's my fucking country. knock it the hell off. nailah all-but-accuses sanaki of being soft on crime; sanaki points out the other nations of notice of tellius have known each other a hell of a lot longer than they've known Hatari and they could freeze them out if they so wanted, idk, just lots of opportunities to explore the characters + their blind spots here

i'd also probably just read some opium wars stuff and grope around for parallels there. or ACTUALLY watch the wire, lol, my entire impression of that show is "mcnulty mansult yes" lmao
