Jun. 12th, 2020 03:38 pmconspiracy theory: it's responsive-"required" sites that killed the old web
i say that tongue-in-cheek but after about three days of really trying to Understand(tm) css flexboses/the grid shit (without hacking it via bootstrap or something) i swear to god this shit is impenetrable - it definitely crosses the line from hobbyist 'hacking almost-from-scratch tumblr/dw layouts is mega fun plus RESULTS even with minimal html/css knowlage' to 'where do i start bruh'
like, you *have* to have the latest browsers and you *have* to have some sort of like ... corporate-sponsored "generator"/"weebly-esque paid site"/"design program" helper to really do it right and nnnnngh gosh i hate hate hate what it means in terms of like yet another barrier for say, high school girls who just want to build a bomb ass site without being a ""coder"""" (aka the thing that made web 1.0 an entire thing.)
i will figure it out eventually only because lol stubborness but oh my g o d
edit: i cannot BELIEVE that with all the bullshit hokey pokey 'website builders' around that tumblr is still by far the most accessible html/css WYSIWYG editor oh my god
YELLING

Date: 2020-06-12 10:45 pm (UTC)I feel that impenetrable wall between kids making their own damn sites and corporate need to market, advertise and control media heavily. These Things were like entry level to developing great skills and taking complete ownership and autonomy over your internet presence and experiences.
You could make a static page or update as frequently as you like, express yourself, make a shrine, start a club or business. Without being at the mercy of someone else’s rules and regulations or piggy backing off your content.
Now we’re all cloistered into a few large nonstop channels and that’s lead to nothing but problems, exploitation, loss of established boundaries and recognized unspoken rules. (See also, bad eggs non withstanding : some kids might not feel so threatened by adult spaces if they knew how to navigate and create their own spaces and weren’t all shoved in the same feed with us.)
More and more I want to write tutorials on old school web development, I think it’s some of the most accessible form of bare bones disconnect from Major hosts and media internet hermiting.
