Jun. 12th, 2020 03:38 pmconspiracy theory: it's responsive-"required" sites that killed the old web
i say that tongue-in-cheek but after about three days of really trying to Understand(tm) css flexboses/the grid shit (without hacking it via bootstrap or something) i swear to god this shit is impenetrable - it definitely crosses the line from hobbyist 'hacking almost-from-scratch tumblr/dw layouts is mega fun plus RESULTS even with minimal html/css knowlage' to 'where do i start bruh'
like, you *have* to have the latest browsers and you *have* to have some sort of like ... corporate-sponsored "generator"/"weebly-esque paid site"/"design program" helper to really do it right and nnnnngh gosh i hate hate hate what it means in terms of like yet another barrier for say, high school girls who just want to build a bomb ass site without being a ""coder"""" (aka the thing that made web 1.0 an entire thing.)
i will figure it out eventually only because lol stubborness but oh my g o d
edit: i cannot BELIEVE that with all the bullshit hokey pokey 'website builders' around that tumblr is still by far the most accessible html/css WYSIWYG editor oh my god

(<a href=“https://amassment.org/ ”>amassment</a> is a great directory for web shrines with beautiful layouts, most all done in a variety of hand coding! So don’t give up hope!)

Date: 2020-06-14 07:02 pm (UTC)Wow, thank you! :)
These webpages are lovely and inspiring, and some look simple enough while still seeming very un-hamster-dance-y.
I'm just now looking through a coding course for the sake of HTML, but had no idea about CSS - I'm going to look that up, along with php. (I mean, anything is better than copypasting in neopets...)

Date: 2020-06-14 08:32 pm (UTC)In my experience css isn’t too difficult, I can’t say I’m truly adept at it, I learn something new with each project, but it feels more streamlined, a little easier to waffle without and get pages to do things or look a certain way that can’t be done with just html, and it makes simple styling like font, backgrounds, link color and effect SUPER easy! It’s very accessible if you want something you can just do by hand too, no need for bootstraps or plug ins and applications either! The end result can be very nice or professional modern looking pages too if that’s what you’d like! Personally I just like to abuse it for 90’s to mid 2000’s era stuff. |D
(God I can already hear that song ringing in my ears.)
