Anonymous asked: What do you like about Gonzo's Hellsing?
#i have a secret fondness for the demented carmen sandiego look that the old hellsing had #heavy gothic blacks and angular-bordering-on-grotesque suited it
still stand by those tags in a nutshell.
I also … very much appreciate how Alucard looks - not made deliberately ugly, but he’s not classically-anime-bishie beautiful, there. He has actual lines, he looks old in a fair few angles, his face is chiseled and hacked away like a crude stone to the point where it’s invoking the uncanny valley. I actually try to channel that version in my artworks more than anything, and think it’s telling that the one overwhelming compliment is that I’ve nailed how he’s supposed to come across.
do you ever think about how alucard is integra’s darkest fears and rage personified?
he is an extension of her mind and monsterhood - he is her great and terrible terror and need to blindly destroy when men with guns were sent to kill her as a child. he was her helpless rage then, and her rage now - the extension of her terrible and corrosive power and legacy (forcibly given), gone wrongwrongwrong. he is her broken innocence (simply wronged and smashed and twisted in different times) - and that small and lingering flame of hope of acceptance and the need to remake oneself to set things right.
because I sure do.
#hellsing is the world's best monster story wrapped in the silliest package possible #hellsing is about a teenage girl coping with evil and loss of power and regaining it tenfold #and learning just how corrosive power can be #hellsing is about acceptance with it all.that long and slow and painful road that takes decades - but you will get there. # - (to a lesser extent pip is also this for seras) #( PIP LITERALLY BECOMES SERAS' PERSONIFICATION OF A MONSTER IT DOESN'T GET MORE OBNOXIOUSLY CLEAR THAN THAT) #there is a lot wrong with hellsing but i forgive it all for this
cryptidmak asked: ☕ Thoughts on Integra letting Alucard turn her? Going with the original anime vs. Ultimate if you'd like, since they have two different endings. I don't think I've seen you post any opinions on this topic, and I'm curious.
Anonymous asked: (I might be doing this wrong, but...) ☕️ Your thoughts on Alucard and Walter’s final confrontation? (I’m thinking about what Alucard says to taunt Walter, and about Walter’s motivation to do what he does, etc. and I’d love to hear your thoughts.)
It's a very little known fact in Hellsing's fandom that there's six rare JP-only artbooks containing animation pre-production work of the OVA, all with the name of "Ryoji Nakamori".
Even I had been in the fandom for well over 5 years with an active interest in sakuga animation before realizing it. Regardless, over the next 5 years I made a point to collect all six of them - and I hope this post will shed a little light to these suckers.
writing this idea down outside of my journal For Reasons:
there's two point-n-click visual-novel-y games i've had in mind for a year now, one ero-survival-horror one with original characters I'll keep mum for now, but the other one is based off of this hellsing episodic idea i think i mentioned very briefly here before.
the tl;dr is it's post-OVA timeskip; Alucard's back with the group, integra's still young enough to go on the field, and the hellsingers have answered the mission call of "go eradicate some sketchy looking vampires from an oil rig in the bermuda triangle" , and end up running into Cthulhu instead - like, this is not a very complicated story XD more of a 'i know (almost) exactly what's going to happen but the execution is so much fun and a nolstagia blast i'll keep watching' kind of thing.
the visuals, I'm thinking as almost ... either this combination of full "hand drawn characters + hand drawn backgrounds" a la path of radiance's sprites ... or "hand drawn characters, third person PS1-looking backgrounds a la path of radiance's overworld map" but just maybe shamelessly ganked from MGS1 (again) (listen that game still slaps). so either no, or minimal "choices" (other than like a secret ending?), just this interesting hybrid experiment that's less taxing for me than a movie or even a comic. under 10 waist-up sprites, a few different expressions, 5 cutscenes or so, a script that's the size of an average oneshot fic... it's a Project, aye, but it's not ginormous.
godot as a game engine looks p interesting (and on linux too yay!) and after squinting at a few tutorials, if I keep the story short, this feels like a pretty doable "demo" of dipping my toe into games and seeing if I like interactive stories / would want to do the slightly longer ero-survival-horror one. (it's also semi-intentionally crafty, marketing wise; keep the hellsing one free b/c of i-don't-own-the-characters-obviously reasons, higher chance of that one going viral, get people confident in the execution of the story for the other one. idk!)
oh lord I have opinions! :D oh you meant headcanons, heh. It's in two parts: unpopular headcanons that I've thought about a lot, and an old copypasta'd list of sex headcanons from the defunct nsfw tumblr because they were funny and held up remarkably well, and I'd like to archive them.
alucard privately and badly wants to die and in fact his happiest ending is allowing him to do so after integra's passed, and the next generation of hellsingers take over. (eg, seras & pip)
There's "lost episode" of hellsing in my head where the three of them (seras, integra, alucard) post-timeskip investigate an abandoned oil rig in the bermuda triangle and end up running into Cthulhu. the Major is in there somewhere. :D (Thinking as a deconstruction of the "Nazis flee to Argentina" trope, incidentally).
this one's way less personal / way lighter (lol) in comparison to the others but it was partially spawned off of a dream once, and the whole thing felt remarkably, mmm, faithful? to the tone of the series as a whole. I may devote some time to this later, may not.
I fucking love Hellsing. Granted, most of that is residual love that’s still rattling around inside me from about…oh, I don’t know, eighth grade or so? but yeah no, I used to be one of those slightly greasy Hot Topic babies camped out in the manga aisle at the bookstore, up to my elbows in the messy grotesque art of that goddamn series. I really felt like I was getting away with something, I used to hold the pages close to my chest when someone passed by.
in hindsight, I think what I was getting away with was a straight shot of kink. right in the veins. I don’t think Hellsing meant to be quite (quite) as kinky and like–illicitly hot as it was? I always got the impression it was aiming For Boys, what with all the tits and gore and guns and revisionist supernatural WWII stuff. but uh. maybe the target ended up being a little wider than that.
it’s hard to even describe it exactly, but I know I wasn’t the only teenage girl who ended up in sort of a knot over the series. like, here, this is just a sampling: there’s this deeply enforced master/servant relationship between a lady knight (who exists at this crossroads of female self-presentation that I think gave many young lesbians a big “ding” moment) and her vampire–dog, I think, is the best word. this terrifying arcane beast who rips her enemies apart with his teeth, and comes to heel at her command, and clearly clearly gets off on the dynamic. he crawls to her on his knees with the darkness of hell yawning open in his wake and she feeds him a drop of her blood and they never touch one another, and frankly it’s still a bit too much for me. there’s this lingering, fetish-y attention paid to the shape of guns, and to gloved hands. there’s binding rituals and monstrous transformation and a vampire fledgling who has this whirlwind of sexualized daddy issues that manifest in whether or not she can allow herself to drink blood like her sire encourages. everyone is in tight suits or billowing silk neckties or leather straightjackets, and double-jointed or their eyes are glowing or they’re licking things and look, I was a kid and this was all pretty overwhelming.
and like. I don’t think this was the intention! but holy hell, this manga and anime slammed into a small female subset of my generation like a runaway train, and gave us all, you know. stuff to think about.
this is me nerding over the nuts and bolts of making comic pacing work more than hellsing specifically but i do think hirano-san’s action-drawing skill (and the layering of storytelling) is
o b s c e n e l y underrated.
especially since it’s seen only as gorn porn (which it is, don’t get me wrong) and not that and a delicate understanding of clarity, beats, how to rip at your heart while alucard’s still guninng down mooks like no tomorrow, the fuckkin detail in general, the clarity again. like - take it from someone who does the same medium - action scenes are fucking nightmarish to draw.
(-gestures @ self with a ‘kill me now’ expression lmao-) (analysis doesn’t count as procrastination right)
take these pages from the brazil fight: this whole thing is a start-to-finish slaughter when the paramilitary force finds alucard. from a ‘how do i execute this visually’ standpoint, it’s a man vs nature fight, you are required to dial up the intensity a bit. there’s some lovely set-up with alucard emerging from already being gunned down once, so the stakes are pretty high - first blood has been dealt and you know this monster’s just itching to be let loose.
and so he does.
most of the paneling is literally just three or four rectangular pages a pages, no fancy dynamics, no interruptions - it’s literally like screenshots from a movie right in a row. partially because with the amount of blood/dynamicism, things can get complicated as shit visually, and hirano’s strength is bold ball-bustin’ delight in horror, so the framing is simple to let it shine.
note too how he plays on negative shapes in the first two panels - inversing alucard’s face goes a hell of a long way towards a not-quite jump-scare but close.
before i mention the exquisite way how the blood trails lead the eye to the next panels, also note that the first entire page is just alucard chompin’ down on a neck; manga tends to be slower in pacing than western comics (not unheard of western comics to have 10-12 panels in a page) - which works in favor of scenes like this. more drawing, yeah, but reading it is hella easier.
second page is a classic (action > (close up for shock effect) > wide pan of a reaction set of beats) - the whole spread deliberately moves from uncomfortably close up shots > wide pan, like the chaos is spreading outwards. classic movie cinematography.
third page is another beautiful 3-beat-setup like mentioned right up above. again, hirano knows his cinematography what with alucard’s face being placed in the same screen real estate for a delicious ‘oh-shit-i’m fucked-eyes-meet-eyes’ moment.
fourth page seems a little unnecessary at first glance (there’s nothing he’s doing there that he’s not doing in other panels) but it’s telling if you line up these pages and delete that page, something feels off about the pacing; it doesn’t quite feel like alucard’s gone through the whole group before facing down the last soldier (below). again, spreading the chaos outwards.
you know what I love about these pages too? one of the only times alucard’s not using his guns in the whole brazil episode. it’s a beautiful visual underline towards that ‘man vs nature’ skewed power balance; he’s a terrifying monster that is perfectly willing and able to shred apart trained military men with guns, and that fact doesn’t matter to the point it’s laughable.
- drags fingers down face - ART!!!!!!!!!!
now this moment could be really complex to draw from a series of ‘how thefuck do we hint that alucard’s used his weird ass telepathic powers to lock the dude in without showing door mechanisms or loosing the pace of this whole thing’
fear.
raw primal scrabbling-at-the-door-terror at being locked in with that. i’m honestly in awe at how hirano shows that clarity of expressions even in those butt-uggo ski-masks (though actually the eye-holes tend to make the eyes more circular in fear more, so +1 for deviously brilliant character designs)
i have a theory in general that good comics are made up of nothing but action>reaction pair setups - which is slightly beside the point, but you see it here how there’s one explicit action per panel, it’s very clear - the head drops, swat guy reacts in fear, alucard steps forward, has a second sub-action by locking the door in anticipation of swat guy pissing in his pants and running for it - which he then does.
(note the panel sizing too; biggest one is the looming malice of alucard with fucking blood and gore dripping from his hands how metal is this.)
i’m gonna say my one critique out of this whole set of pages is hirano goofed by making the hand silhouette on the door not easy to read (personally i’d remove the ‘wha’ speech bubble so it’s clear his whole arm is reaching towards it), so hey, nobody’s perfect. what i do like on that page is the stark negative (white) space as the swat guy turns slowly in fear again, which pairs -
- really damn well with this inky black dark horror walking forward.
and bam, nothing like a good full-pager to go from ‘teeny tiny corner panel’ to ‘oh FUCK’ in terms of contrast (mike of hellboy fame does the same thing in his comics which tells me it’s a reliable trick). and i also just noticed how vaguely unsettling it is that alucard’s hinted to be leaning on a wall with the outstretched arm like he just slid in there and the weight of the dead guy pressing down. brrrr.
i lov lov lov that last page too - another gorgeous if terrifying action/reaction blitz. boot step action to ratchet up the tension (you know the guy is deader than dead) > paired successive actions as swat guy reloads and falls back against the door, cowering - you can practically feel the pistol shaking in his hand > alucard’s response.
(it’s unorthodox to split the last panes like that but tbh i think it works with the necessary pause as alucard gives the greatest line of all time back. brilliant multi-level work of symbolism there; note that the ‘i get that a lot’ has his face carefully obscured; it’s like a barb against his back, something he fights off through the whole series, naturally (and naturally for the series that sides with the monsters) he -as the dark mirror to humanity - turns it around and asks the quintessential existential question in return - what are you?
“[Alucard is] surrounded by the equivalent of peasants and to have no one to play with … no one who’s a good partner or opponent.
There’s no one to push against, you can basically walk all over anyone who comes in your way - you’re gonna be be incredibly bored.
You’re going to be desperate for someone who can match you on your level, who can be some sort - if not companion, at least playmate. Someone who you can look at and say yes - you are an equal to me, and that’s what I saw when I saw Alucard’s relationship with Integra. Here’s a guy who spent hundreds of years and has finally said - you, you, little girl - have more strength of will and more power than hundreds of years of people that I have torn through in my life as a vampire. -You- I will serve, you I will spend time with.”
this is probably over-reading into new trailers, but the chasm between ‘it takes a monster to kill a monster’castlevania tagline vs the ‘it takes a human to kill a monster’ line in hellsing (from alucard, i note) -
a 4k word study in sequential pacing, Hellsing and the female gaze, subversions of the genre, deconstructing the Gothic death & sex themes that interplay with the power dynamics (and why, more broadly, it seemed to strike a chord over the years)…
… and a few irreverent comments hopefully in the spirit of the base material. Don’t take what’s essentially a gushing liveblog of a reread too seriously. :P
a few notes before we begin:
canon-typical strong NSFW/18+ for gore/gun-violence given I’m posting scans/gifs, and general frank discussions on the sexual side given the themes. spoilers, too.
pasting/typing in the translations from the Dark Horse version, which I have since krad is indeed that Extra™.
focusing on the triad of Integra/Alucard/Walter with a large side of AxI just because I subjectively find their dynamic interesting. will be skipping the pages in favor of ‘em for stamina. nothing personal.
been doing a lot of neat little side projects recently - and one of them has been collaborating with the fabulous hellsing ficwriter @lesmismignon to make Snow White in a physical form! :3
(…and *cough*, if you like fairy tale AU’s and monster/human romances minus some of the crassness/wtf-ness that the canon series has, you’ll probably dig said fic!)
Just had it shipped to both of us, and thought I’d share some pics~ It’s one of my favorite Hellsing longfics ever, and the author has been an absolute delight through the whole process.
tbh, it’s the little collaborations like this that makes me glad fandom exists - warts and all. Would never have seen such a wonderful collection of fics otherwise, and it was legit an honor to have fun with a new friend and to be trusted with this. <3
With this bullet lodged in my chest, covered with your name, I will turn myself into a gun, because it’s all I have, because I’m hungry and hollow and just want something to call my own. I’ll be your slaughterhouse, your killing floor, your morgue and final resting, walking around with this bullet inside me ‘cause I couldn’t make you love me and I’m tired of pulling your teeth.
